I guess what blows my mind is it seems like Niang is owning this combine, yet the respect he's earning from it is minimal.

The NBA doesn't want players who are productive now, they want players who MIGHT be productive in 2-3 years. There also seems to be a myth that guys who play 4 years in college have maxed out on their potential. I might have used to believe that but Niang took quite a big step forward between his Junior and Senior seasons. Buddy Hield improved a lot coming into this year too and Ejim took his game to a level I don't think anyone thought he could get to his senior year. Those guys really debunked the whole idea that players have a "ceiling".

Well, with this mentality, it's no wonder so many of the same NBA teams routinely suck on a regular basis when teams like the Spurs and other such teams - teams that might take a look at Niang (although it wasn't mentioned that the Spurs were interested in him) - are good year after year.

Yeah - we're not interested in players that are good now - let's gamble on guys that might be good 3 years from now, but likely will never be good.

What a bunch of ****tards.

Huh? The Spurs take tons of gambles on guys with high upsides, especially overseas guys. And thats been a huge part of their success, Parker, Ginobili, Splitter, Scola, and others. Even trading for Kawhi was that type of move, getting a guy who shot 29% from 3 and was a pretty average offensive player but with off the charts athleticism. You can find a guy like Niang anywhere, there's plenty of guys in the D-League who can be back of the rotation role players in the right situation. For the Spurs to get impact players, from where, they've drafted they are looking for those kind of high upside, projectible talents.

"Georges Niang made sure that his name resonated in all circles with strong performances.

Niang didn't put on a show when it came to measurements, but as the ever-evolving Association shows each year, measurements are far from the only things that matter. So while it may sound like Niang has a terrible standing vertical leap of 25 inches, it didn't matter much on the court.
In live game action, Niang put on an absolute show, scoring 20 points and simply out-hustling others. Rave reviews poured in, as Mike Hlas of the Cedar Rapids Gazette and Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress.com illustrated:

Georges Niang had 20 points in his NBA Combine game today. Steve Prohm, here in Chicago to watch, said "I think Georges was terrific today."

Georges Niang showing off his high skill-level and outstanding feel for the game. Helping himself so far. Doing a little of everything.
2:35 PM - 12 May 2016

Niang playing well on the court shouldn't come as a surprise, not after he played significant time over the course of four seasons at Iowa State. He most recently posted averages of 20.5 points and 6.2 rebounds per game in the 2015-16 season.
Detractors will point out Niang's lack of upside because he's already 22 years old, but he posted a major statement at the combine. He's pro ready and going to contribute for a long time in the NBA, a rare reassurance in a draft process littered with potholes."

Already 22 years old? That is still young. I understand the issue with kane being 25 but since when is 22 too old?

Judging by the combine that would mean 7 guys he can torch.

Weren't the scrimmages mostly among likely second round picks (and did not include many first round picks)?

So 4-5 guys he can torch? Boston isn't going to have 8 lottery picks. I think most guys projected as lottery picks and a few experienced euros who don't need the scrimmage as much sat out the scrimmages but there were still lots of players who will end up first round.

I'd love for Georges to be competing with tons of rookies even if they're all more athletic than him. He's been torching guys more athletic and roughly his age for 4 years. It's NBA vets who have their own bag of tricks I'd be more concerned about.

It reads kind of funny, but I think he meant that the Spurs are the exception adn do take gambles on guys like Niang and that's why they are good on a regular basis. Which to me, isn't really a gamble though. You are looking at a guy who can come in, play and be an impact now. As opposed to hoping this 19 year old kid reaches his perceived potential some day.

Agreed. And I think Niang can play with the first round guys too. He did all season. His problem is going to be NBA veterans who don't take his fakes, hold their positions, and are athletic enough to go with him on his patented moves. But there won't be many who can stop his baby hook. That is a great shot.

Niang will have to play defense. As much as people say "no defense in NBA" - there is defense. You won't play if you have an overall losing impact on your team. It's all about advanced stats and plus minus.

I love Johnny but this has never made any sense to me. Niang doesn't play without shoes but neither does anyone else. It's a relative measurement either way.
So measure them all with shoes. Why ever do a barefoot measure? Are you going to put heels on your 4s and 5s?

It keeps everyone honest. If you only did it with shoes somebody could use lifts or something to pad their height. You could still do it for the shoe measurement of course but then you have to answer the question of why your shoe/no shoe difference is 2 inches more than everyone else. If you only do barefoot you get the "players don't play barefoot" crowd complaining.

It's a standardized test, so that people who think they're smarter than everyone else can make inferences that are probably completely irrelevant to the person's ability. Example 1, Steph Curry.
