When I was in high school, I won a cookie baking contest at the county fair. I won small plaque and I think $30.

When I was a kid I won a greased pig contest. My prize? I got to keep the pig. We raised her for a couple of years and butchered her. Best chops I ever had. I kind of wonder what all of those other kids would have done if they managed to catch her.

Probably 12, 13 years ago, at a small Iowa town's festival, the Lions club (or something similar) was raffling off a live goat as a prize. I always thought that was maybe the strangest (and most prototypically-Iowa) prize ever for a raffle.

I worked for a local radio station in college and they sponsored a sauerkraut eating contest for Ackley Sauerkraut Days. I was a 297 lb offensive lineman at the time and the contest was to see if anyone could beat me. A Pound of kraut and 2 weiners. I had them down in just under a minute. Next closest was almost 4.

Also in college a room of XC runners had a wall of shame for an 80 oz challenge. 80 oz of water and keep it down for 5 mins. Wall full of pics of people puking. I had it down in 64 seconds. Felt the puke coming on. Camera was ready. Let out the biggest belch of my life and felt great. Look of awe on several faces

I signed up for something at the state fair and won a 3 night stay down in Florida. All I would have to do would be to sit through a meeting and pay for my own way down there.

I've won many trophies and plaques for showing sheep. The most money I won at a show was $250 dollars when I was 11.

Won a chili cook off - meat grinder
Pie bake off - $5000
Dutch oven contest (3 of them) - Several sets of dutch ovens
Restaurant eating challenges - lots of shirts and bumper stickers
Computer Skills contests (in high school) - A couple medals and a trophy

Notable losses
Fried pickle eating contest. I came in second for the $100 prize. The dude ate like 190 pickle chips in 4 minutes. I was at like 80.

Bobbin for burgers... never again will I do that

Won whitest legs contest at Tracy, Iowa during their now debunked town celebration. There is a reason people around me wear sunglasses. $5 bucks in the bag.

Same celebration, different year won the 2 man hand saw contest with my wife's cousin. Not sure if they had any money that time or not.

I'll bet Papalew could give you a run for your money on that whitest leg thing. Redhead complexion. He's the only guy I've ever know that waterskis wearing jeans...those legs NEVER see daylight. :)

How do you prep for a competitive eating contest? Not eat beforehand? Practice some in advance?

I've heard before you're supposed to eat a buttload of salad in the days before to stretch out your stomach.

When I was a freshman, a group of us had a contest to see who would eat spoonfuls of random condiments and other cooking powders.

I don't remember the order, but it included ketchup, mustard, cinnamon, protein powder, hot sauce that probably shouldn't be consumed on its own, and other stuff I can't remember.

There was no prize, and there were no real winners.

I had a teaspoon of garlic salt in the dorms once on a dare. That ended very poorly.

i made a little money in 3rd grade by putting ketchup in my chocolate milk and drinking it. I was the only one that understood that the ketchup sunk to the bottom
