I have a friend visiting from out-of-state tonight for the first time. We are going out to dinner, and then to lunch again tomorrow, so I was trying to think of all of the unique Ames places to take her.

I was thinking The Spice tonight for something a little nicer, and then Hickory Park or Dublin Bay for lunch tomorrow. (We discussed The Cafe, but she's doing a low-carb thing.)

If you had a friend visiting from out of town, and you could take them to breakfast, lunch, and dinner anywhere in Ames, where would it be?

Dinner: Spice sounds good. The low carb deal kinda kills Great Plains. Lunch: Downtown Deli, it just has such a unique charm to it.

Yeah, I thought GP, too, and then axed it due to the low carb thing. I didn't even think of Downtown Deli - are they open on Saturdays? I just recently had their salad for the first time, with pickles in it?? CHANGED MY LIFE.

Definitely are open. Get a seat at the counter by the window and do some people watching.

That is genius. GREAT idea - I didn't even know they were open on weekends. Shoot, I didn't even know until this week that they were open at night, for some reason I thought they only did lunch.

WSD for lunch. Es Tas for dinner. Tacos and a great beer selection = hell yes.

Maybe WAS for pizza and wings. God, I love Pit wings.

The beer selection had me pondering Olde Main for dinner, too - but the food can be hit or miss for the price. (Not that it's all that expensive, but just comparatively expensive enough that I want my food to be consistently good).

How does Downtown Deli compare to West Street Deli?

I really like both of them. Downtown Deli is a little bit more of a traditional deli. Hard to describe the differences. If you haven't been to both/either, I recommend checking them out.

Why would a low carb diet rule out The Cafe, but not the others you have listed. The Cafe has a lot of variety on the menu.

Aunt Maude's for dinner, The Spice would be my second choice, then Dublin Bay. Breakfast at the Grove, the cafe, or stomping grounds. Lunch at Hickory Park because it is by far our most famous restaurant. Though I am addicted to the downtown deli.

Skip their food and go to Olde Main (or DGs) for beer later. Win-win.

Normally, I don't think it would rule out The Cafe, but the current menu (since it rotates so much) seemed mostly to involve bread or noodles. Not at all discounting it, as we love it, the current menu was just what made the decision.

Ooh, Stomping Grounds breakfast. And I LOVE The Cafe's breakfasts. I haven't been to The Grove in forever! I love Olde Main's omelet bar because they have feta as an option.

And you, sir, are a genius. That's brilliant. We'd discussed the wine bar, but I honestly don't like much wine.

Up until 2 years ago, I hadnt either. We can be shamed together.

Thanks, bos, I feel better. It's just enough out of the way that I hadn't ever gotten there.
