Depends on how good of a squid, puke, whatever SAE calls freshman you are. If you mind the rules you won't get hazed as much. Not that big a deal on time commitment. You are expected to do certain things, sometimes at certain times, get them done and no problems.

This could not be more wrong. Although I do not know exactly what goes on "behind closed doors" everywhere, Iowa State is a non-hazing university for all activities, Sports, Clubs, Drama, and Fraternities. The university looks very very negatively on hazing and any report of it is taken care of very quickly.

Joining a fraternity has been one of the best decisions for me, meeting all of my best guy and girl friends through the numerous activities. Just like every organization you will ever join, you will only get as much benefit out of this as you put forth. If you sit in your room studying or playing video games all day, sure you wont have many time commitments, but you'll never meet anyone. Yell Like hell is a huge time commitment but its a great time too, my best girl friend now, was my partner for it freshman year, and the after parties are always fun.

Oh poor ref, not athletic enough or doesnt have 4 friends to form a team...gets revenge by getting behind the whistle.
More athletic than most of the people I ref (cough bigcyfan82 cough ). My experience is some of the Greeks take intramurals WAY too seriously and it turns into a pain in the *** for referees, which the majority of suck as it is so when things get ugly, they get REALLY ugly.

Yeah, I was in a frat (that's right I called it a frat) and I do know what happens behind closed doors. Every one has some type of hazing. All of my hazing was good natured, nothing that put us in danger. Mess with your minds a little, then go get a couple sixers (just like Dazed n Confused).

Of course the official stance is harshly against hazing! I challenge you to find a single school that DOESN'T have a policy like that. Of course, there are also harsh university policies against cohabitation, embezzlement, and cheating, but please don't tell me you think none of those things ever happen anywhere. Hazing is a violation of policy, and is illegal in most cases, but it sure as hell still happens- at Iowa State and most other places. I heard and saw it firsthand myself on MANY occasions while I was at ISU.

Anyone who believes we live in a happy, shiny world where hazing doesn't exist is either naive, gullible, or downright stupid.

The world is ending. I agree with ornryactor.

I can think of AT LEAST 5 separate occasions I've seen hazing. Greeks never understand why some people hate the Greek system without trying it and that's exactly why. I'd be embarrassed to be involved with making a bunch of guys run around campus naked and calling attention to it by driving in front of them honking the horn on my truck. That's REALLY awesome when a university police officer or Ames officer sees that and you now have a bunch of guys that are going to get nailed for indecent exposure and end up on the sex offender registry. Sounds real intelligent to me. :jimlad:

Yeah we streaked around sorority circle. It would be just some random night and a couple older guys would do it with all the freshman. A fast couple minute run, no car horns or anything.

Hey all i recently signed with a fraternity and i am wondering what to expect with the time commitment for pledge class, parties etc. thanks:notworthy:

I'm picturing the scene from Old School with the pledges standing on the roof, bricks tied to . . . . ., and then dropped from the building.

Last year there were car horns, blaring music, bottle rockets, etc. Its like they were begging the cops to show up.

Yeah, that isn't too smart. I was there from 98-02 and the freshman coming in when I was a senior had a way different attitude then the older guys. They seemed a lot more dumb and entitled. We had guys like that but only a couple, now it seems like the norm.

Expect at least 6 hours/week of time committed to yell like hell until homecoming. IIrc, practice is 8-10 p.m. or 9-11 pm Tues, Thurs, and Sun. All your time practicing yell like hell will be well worth it if you get to paint up for semis and finals (especially when helping to paint up the sorority girls you're paired with.)

:biglaugh::biglaugh: Yeah, if you get to paint up for semis or finals your life will be changed forever...makes it all worth it to get to embarass yourself on gameday in front of the whole ISU fan base rather than just your fellow fratboys.

This is your opinion, and you are welcome to it. For Greeks YLH is a competition much like the other activities around homecoming (Lawn display, banner painting, etc) if your pairing does well it can help "win" the competition. This doesnt mean much to you if your not Greek and thats OK, but it does mean something to others.

I did YLH, it was a great way for freshman to meet other Greeks and I know some of the guys at our house ended up dating and marrying girls from the pairing. That being said the actual skit is kinda stupid but I;m not much into Drama and lesb. . . I mean thespians.

Unfortunately these things happen. Some people's character is not judged well prior to them joining.

Saying that these things always happen in a "Frat" is like saying that all football players get in trouble in college. There are far more people, greek or not, student athlete or not, who go through college and never get into any major trouble.

A few bad eggs give everyone a bad reputation because they are tied to a specific house or to Greek's in general.
