I had heard Marcus Fizer almost quit when Larry E became coach due to the stepped up conditioning program. The story I heard was he walked up to Eustachy and informed him that he did not come to ISU on a track scholarship. Glad he stuck around. Remember - "That which does not kill us makes us stronger."

I think this was actually Tinsley not Fizer. I heard Fizer was on board with the conditioning from Day 1 after playing with several top players at summer camps. He new he needed to get faster and have more endurance especially with the short bench they had.

Tinsley came straight from the street ball circuit and hadn't really done much conditioning before and had a very rude awakening.

Anyone know for sure what position Courtney Messingham will be coaching on Rhoads staff? I played for Coach Messingham, when he was at Iowa Lakes Comm. College back in the 90's, the man is very determined to win. Loved playing for the guy, very much respect for him.

Wow, the DBs didn't have good fundamentals? Really? I just thought they were running around hoping they would just happen to be in the right place at the right time on purpose.

Yeah I remember everyone was really high on Sheppard when he arrived. Now he's gone and everyone's like, "Sheppard was the suck. The new guy's THE MAN".

We're in the "wtf hype" stage of a new coaching tenure. The coaches are building enthusiasm among the fanbase by telling us all what we want to hear. This is standard operating procedure. Maybe if I hadn't seen all of these things happen a mere 2 years ago with Chizik I wouldn't be this cynical.

I am very happy with the coaching staff. I didn't like that Chiz hired his buddies two years ago so I think this is a lot better staff overall.

However like you said, we hear this stuff all the time with new coaches. Everybody loved Sheppard while he coached here then we had multiple huge threads after Chizik left about how his program was crap and he was lazy.

We heard all about how the coaches were going back to the fundamentals because our previous guys weren't fundamentally strong. Now we're hearing that again.

I'm just saying we tend to love our guys because they are out guys. Good coaching will show up on the field. It's way to early to expect too much next season but I do have high hopes for the staff.

+1. I'm excited for next season, but nothing I hear from the coaches at this point is going to make me more excited. I'm just looking forward to seeing the team on the field. And for that matter, I'm really looking forward to seeing how well we improve over the course of the season.

Its the same stuff we heard when Chizik took over. But it looks like Rhoads and this staff see the problems and issues and are fixing them, something the last staff struggled with. He also isnt complaining about the previous staff and the hand he was delt. The future does look better for ISU FB with Rhoads and staff on board.

That's a very good point. Wasn't one of the first things chizzlestick said was that we only had a handful of D-1 talent? He was making excuses from day 1.

Also agree, nice not to here constantly how bad the situation. not that I was ever a big DMAC fan, but he never really complained about his situation, I think he had like a dozen seniors in his first year. now that was an empty cupboard.

We see this fall, It does make you wonder what type of conditioning program these guys had if a running back was ready to quit after a disciplinary workout.

I'll be the first to admit that I don't know much about S&C coaches or their philosophies, so all of the above could be completely accurate. But I distinctly remember when Sheppard came on board with Chizik, that he was praised for being from the speed and explosiveness school of thought as well. Everyone was excited because he was a vast departure from Getty, who everyone said was about size/mass.

I guess my point is that I don't really believe any hype about S&C programs until I see the results on the field.

Getty was definitely never all about size/mass. He was criticized by some because he wasn't as much about size/mass as they thought he should be actually.

I have heard that a lot of Shep's workouts were more about bodybuilding than about "football lifting." Of course alot of this comes down to opinion. One thing is for sure, we weren't demonstrably in better football shape these past two years than before.

I'm curious as to what RB nearly quit. I don't like hearing things like that. Please, no guesses etiher.

Nearly quit means nothing at all. People are always getting pissed off and "nearly quitting." I knew a few fb players when I was in school and if "nearly quitting" meant anything, Dmac would have had like 45 kids every year, most of the nearly quitting talk is just a frustrataed player blowing off steam.

I have a different recall on this issue. Mac would drag out the taking over a winless program card even in the last half of his coaching tenure when the entire roster were his recruits.

I remember the same thing, CarolinaCy.

We are fans, it's always more likely that we are going like whoever we have over who was here or who someone we don't like has/had. It's just the way it is.

I'm no expert, and specifically not one on S&C coaches. McKnight's resume is nice though. Pretty much all the assistants Rhoads has hired have a more impressive resume though than their Chizik counter-part. What's that mean? we'll know in about 7 months.

I'm excited regardless. Having Rhoads, someone who clearly respects Iowa State as a school and community makes it very exciting!!

Speaking of Chizik, which I don't like to do but anyway... I wonder if he will take the names off the jersey's down at Auburn. I'm guessing no but he seemed pretty gung ho about up here.

Could be. I've lost a few brain cells since then.
