When we signed Rony Nelson everyone was talking him up like he was just a total freak, and now it's doubtful if he can even start or make the two deeps? And Rony Nelson is much more ready physically than David Irving... by FAR. I think you are missing something because Rony Nelson only missed last season because he had to redshirt for academics. He is expected to definitely be in the two deeps and I would be shocked if he didn't start at some point in the year.

It is ridiculous to say that he will leave early to go pro. That is insane. But I do think that his size is something that not one other player on our team brings to the table. Playing DE isn't rocket science. There is technique to be learned and to be a complete starting DE in the Big 12 you need to be perfect at it. However, to play a few snaps a game in pass rushing situations or to give guys some breathers you don't. If he is so football ******** that he can't play one snap this year, then that is fine and he can redshirt, but you can't tell me in an entire year you can't teach this kid enough to get on the field.

And when it comes to his weight, maybe he is skinny or w/e but I highly doubt he is 220 when Paul Rhoads said he is 250. There is no reason to bring that up out of nowhere. Maybe I'm too trusting. 6'7" 250 looks a whole lot different than 6'2 250 and that is my only guess as to why he thought he could be 220. He could've been looking at the wrong player too.

Nelson has been a bit of a disappointment though. The way the coaches talked about him in spring, when they talked about him at all, which was rare, they said he had a long way to go. He was third string on the depth chart after the spring game, and that was probably due as much to the fact that there is a lack of bodies at that position. Willie Scott is ahead of him.

I'm guessing that is because Nelson was hurt during the spring. It's hard to move up the depth chart and prove yourself when you aren't able to play. And the coaches aren't going to just move a guy up the depth chart when he is on the sidelines injured. That is a bad message to send to the rest of your players who are busting their ***** during practice.

He wasn't playing well before he got hurt. I wouldn't put all my eggs in the Rony Nelson basket. In fact, I don't think I'd put one in there right now. It's going to be tough for him to beat out Willie Scott, the way Scott played in the spring game. And Scott is just second string.

I guess we will see but I would bet Nelson gets into the two deeps by the first game of the season and could challenge for a starting spot. I'm really not high on Neal though. Lattimer is a good pass rushing threat and Maggit seems to have some potential but I don't see Willie Scott beating out Nelson.

You do realize people say that about EVERY ISU class right? Every year ISU supposedly has all these hidden gems. ISU doesn't have the money to recruit the best of the best so they are forced to take risks. Sometimes it pays off (KO, Knott, Lamaak, Stephens, Dobbins, etc), but most of the time it doesn't.

I don't know...I've been following recruiting since Rivals started recruiting coverage back in 2002. To me, this class has more talent (many of them sleepers or hidden gems) than any since Chizik's first real class (LJ, Benton, Rump, Tiller, Schwartz, Darks, Sed Johnson, etc). There are quite a few guys in this class that I think "how the heck didn't that kid have more offers?". Guys like Miller, Brackens, Smith, Omoile, Daniels, Richardson the QB. Plus, there was some guys that were academic risks that the staff took a chance on (Standard, Lemke, Pompey) that they came through looking smart about.

As I recall, his position coach said at the start of Spring ball that Rony had a lot of work to do to be more than a situational pass rusher.

i personally was not comparing the talent simply the size... someone said Irving was too light, and i was pointing out that doesnt mean everything. speed 1st, weight 2nd. I dont know anything about iriving besides the fact he is over 6'4"

i was defending/agreeing with another poster.

All I was saying is that everyone thought Rony Nelson was going to be the next Jason Berryman too. And when Rony arrived, and he was still healthy, and he hadn't heard that he was going to have to sit out a year... the coaches said he had a lot of work to do to see the field. Yes, this was before any injuries.

So just don't get all your hopes up too high on David Irving. He has a world of potential, but so have a LOT of recruits that have walked through our doors and never contributed anything. Give him time to learn things and get stronger. If he can play this year, great, but if not don't get down on him because he didn't meet your "expectations". That's all I'm saying.

I already said he needs a lot of work to do and all he has is the potential... I said a RS would help him a lot...
