Eli Horn was a boy with cancer that the team kind of adopted and visited often. It even ended up that he was in NYC getting treatment when they were there for the Pinstripe bowl. Not too long after that he passed away and they planted a memorial tree outside the stadium for him.

I recently realized that his family moved to the CR area and goes to our church.

Edit: I believe Ben Lamaak named his son after Eli.
It makes me so sad to read stories like this.

It also shows just how large a part sports plays in our world.

They also operate a fundraiser for research on pediatric cancer that has some great products.

So if they're removing the hills and tearing out the Jacobson building, does that mean we are losing more seating? Why not replace the grass with permanent seating?

Thanks for the pictures. I was hoping they would have made more progress before the home opener.. I guess the green space and the 30/35 flyover will both be coming in 2019-2020
I expected more. I'm hoping that they were in the final stages and just needed to start planting which would make a dramatic change. I want to see what it looks like from the SEZ concourse. I guess I'll see that in 9 more days.

The "green space" outside the SEZ is still brown. It seems like they are figuring it out as they go and making very slow progress. And from what I see, it just doesn't look right. For instance, now, instead of being blown away by the awesomeness of the south entrance to the stadium, you drive through these leafy signs for Reiman Gardens. The wall is made of that light yellow stone that makes it look like it belongs in Manhattan, KS. And the area immediately outside the SEZ just looks odd. I still can't quite tell what it is supposed to end up like. A simple grass field with some planters would have been fine IMHO.

Any Ames locals care to give an update on the South End Zone Green Space project??

http://www.amestrib.com/news/20180613/work-continuing-on-jack-trice-green-space-project

This article didn't have many updated pictures so it'd be nice to see pictures with the updated progress..
Drove through last weekend and took a look. Project is moving slow but will look great when finished. Still some walking path work to be done and I am assuming they are concrete. I cannot tell about the water feature as far as what still has to be done, honestly- I am not 100% of how big it is either. They were putting down black dirt so that tells me some landscaping must be close to being started.
No way I see this being finished this season.

The Prairie Establishment behind the west stands is still an eyesore. Broadcasters from across the country will see facilities in Austin, Norman, Stillwater, Waco and Iowa City and see immaculately kept facilities. Then, they will come to Ames and see an entire lawn of weeds with one or two actual natural prairie elements that have taken hold behind the west stands. Looks like a roadside ditch! Classy

The Ames Tribune artile linked above says the fountain, elevated walk way, and many landscape items have been axed due to cost and ongoing maintenance requirements.

I should have read that-ha! I actually like this decision better although I was intrigued about the elevated walkway.

They have been working hard on it the past month. Maybe still a chance it is ready by the opener? Doesn't take long to lay sod and put in plantings. Looked like much of the sidewalks had been finished a few days ago when I went by. Should be a much more usable space for game days with the tailgate tents.

Hard to imagine it looking anything like this in the next week!

And the design has been adapted significantly, such as the circular thing is more toward the middle.

4 O'clock in the circle??? Is that like a space needle? Shape it like a cyclone, that would be awesome.

I didn’t know they abandoned the raised walkway. Seemed like a cool idea but obviously a bit too ambitious. I like the idea of the added green space but looks kind of boring. Needs something unique
