It's hard to know how good self is because he had so many McDonald's all Americans bought and paid for
Kansas has plenty of depth. Most teams that lose the caliber of players we have for the number of games we have would be cellar dwellars. What was Iowa State's record in their injury filled season last year? No one has the depth to stay in the Top 5 nationally and easily atop a hard conference after losing 2 key players for the season. KU is down but it's only down relative to their normal elite level. They're still very capable.Yep. Self is the victim here too I guess. He had nothing to do with the lack of depth. If only his primary recruiter wasn't facing federal prison time, maybe he could have picked up another big man.
Bill Self being exposed as a mediocre coach isn't what is going on. Kansas has zero experience in their back court, three freshmen perimeter players, their Top 10 recruit isn't playing like you need a Top 10 recruit to play if ypu need him to start right away, their only senior is a flaky moron, their best big starter and best big off the bench are both out for the season and last night our best defender is out injured.
And their depth is why they are surviving both Dok and DeSousa being out for the year without having a lost season like ISU had last year.Lol you spent all off season on here saying this would be the deepest and most talented Bill Self team of all time

As for talent, Kansas needed Grimes to be better than this at this point. He is in his own head and struggling but is starting to come around. He is shooting 48% from 3 in his last 7 games. He's a below average defender as most freshmen are but at least he's finding the range lately. Would be nice if he would figure out how to get 5 threes a game up rather than 2-3.
The biggest thing I didn't take into account was the impact of how careless and stupid Vick is. The freshmen defer to him too much because he's a senior but Vick really isn't mentally capable to handle that. Hopefully Dotson and Agbaji say screw it and just take over the leadership rols on the team. That transfer has started; hopefully it's not too late.
I am a firm believer in the theory that a team takes on the mentality of their leader. Vick is sloppy and careless and KU has been the same on the road. He isn't gonna change so KU needs to force a change to a different leader or deal with the consequences.
Likely starters to open the season are Moore, Grimes, Vick, Lawson & Azubuike
So that leaves a bench of:
Fr PG Devon Dotson
So SG Marcus Garrett
Rs. Jr SF KJ Lawson
So PF Silvio De Sousa
Fr C David McCormack
That's two McDonald's All American freshmen, two top 35 sophomores and a Top 50 4 star transfer who averaged 12 and 8 at Memphis in his last year there.

Late to the party here...
But is DeSousa somebody who could just say "screw it" and go pro instead of waiting around for his persona non grata status to lift in college? Never play for the Jayhawks?
I think he could easily get a contract in Europe or Australia or someplace like that. Or perhaps sign with a G League team. In fact, I am guessing that is what he does after the appeal is over. Similar to the Miami kid.
Every person who pays attention to basketball would laugh in your face if you told them you though Self was only a good coach because of his provided talent. Comically lazy take. He is a fantastic teacher of the game as well as an excellent x's and o's coach. There probably less than 5 coaches, pro or college, better at calling plays out of a tumeout or stoppage, than Self.
Thank you.
He is already losing a season, though, so does that not make him draft eligible?
Is he not good enough to warrant a serious consideration by the NBA beyond a second-round pick? So his likely fate, if he bails on Kansas, is as you said, looking for a relatively lucrative overseas contract or trying to play his way up from the D-League?
Yeah, he is draft eligible. I am guessing if he declared there is a chance he could be a late round pick based on if he has some good workouts with teams. I read somewhere that he got some offers from some overseas teams already.
That is what I assume will happen as well if his primary concern is basketball. If he wants to stay in school and pursue his degree and play his last season, KU is allowed to continue to keep him on a basketball scholarship.I think he could easily get a contract in Europe or Australia or someplace like that. Or perhaps sign with a G League team. In fact, I am guessing that is what he does after the appeal is over. Similar to the Miami kid.

Claiming otherwise just tags you as having no knowledge of what you're actually watching.

Vick is not a problem as a teammate at all. His presence on the team increases KU's shot at a deep run. Period.
He turned 20 last October so he was already eligible for last year's draft. No idea what his draft chances are. Not a 1st rounder with his small body of work so he would be a G-League/Europe guy most likely.Thank you.

Okay. Thanks. Sounds like the guy never plays for Kansas.
Waiting another whole season of dead air is a lot to give up for the young man.
