So, I finally hammered out the latest round of Arrowverse shows on Netflix, which means I'm finally officially all caught up.... whew. That is a lot of episodes. With that said, the following is my thoughts on each of the shows as well as my updated Superhero TV rankings to include all of them.

The Flash (Season 5): This show definitely took another step back on quality this season, mostly weighed down by being centered around Nora Allen, who's story was up and down all season, as well as a very poor cartoony villain. In fact, I'd call this the worst season of the Flash yet. I never really loved the girl cast as Nora Allen and found her very annoying at times, which didn't help the cause. I will say the show at least ended a bit stronger than the rest of the season.

Supergirl (Season 4): Very surprisingly, I found this show to not only be the best of this round of Arrowverse shows, but also the best season of Supergirl yet. In fact, I'd say this was the only show of all of these I looked forward to watching and didn't get tired of. Especially as the season went on, the show relied less on heavy-handed political messages, which has plagued it in past seasons, and more on organic good storytelling. Bringing in Lex Luthor was really what put the show over the top and Jon Cryer was great in the role. Props to Supergirl.

Arrow (Season 7): After a big solid return to form in S6, S7 ended up being another big step back and disappointment for me. The first half of the season ended up being better than the back half, and the ultimate big bad turned out to be second worst of the show only to Damien Darhk. The whole plot was super convoluted and none of the flash forward storytelling worked. Maybe its only saving grace was that the setup at the end for next season was really pretty good. Of all the shows, Arrow is suffering right now of just going on too low and being forced to repeat the same tropes and schticks over and over again. I'm glad next season is the last and I hope it goes out with a bang. I think they've set it up to.

Legends of Tomorrow (Season 4): Whoof, whoof, whoof this show continues to be just outright painful to watch. Its cheese, camp, and villain of the week storytelling just becomes insufferable to watch most of the time. I can't stand how fast and loose they play with time travel in the show too, as the rules seem to constantly change to essentially whatever they want them to be for that particular episode. Most of the new characters are just awful too, especially Moana. Anything Constantine is about the shows only saving grace.

Here is my updated Superhero TV rankings to include these seasons. You'll notice outside of Supergirl, all of these shows ended up scoring pretty low.

  1. Daredevil (Season 3)
  2. The Punisher (Season 1)
  3. The Flash (Season 1)
  4. Daredevil (Season 2)

Started a free trial of DC universe. Once I saw there was a new season of Young Justice I was sold. Will also watch Titans and Doom Patrol. Then after that I will probably cancel for a bit.

Yeah, I'm letting stuff compile a bit on there before I subscribe likely later this year. After which, I'll then wipe out everything I want to watch in a month or two, then cancel. Right now, I'm working through all my seasons of catching up on Netflix stuff before I cancel my subscription there, which I think could last a good 6 months or so. This will be my first time canceling Netflix.

I'm thinking about cancelling my Netflix account for a bit too. The content just isn't there for me anymore.

I’m guessing that DC Universe will eventually be a part of the new HBO Max subscription. It’s been reported that Doom Patrol S2 will air on HBO Max. I’m guessing it will be bundled similar to the Hulu/Disney+/ESPN+ package that Disney is planning to offer.

That would be nice.

Yeah, that is the direction that streaming is going. The latest domino to fall along these TV studio/movie studio/streaming service integration lines is the Viacom-CBS reintegration, which essentially brings CBS and Paramount back under one house and allows them to work together on their streaming service. This is really news good for Star Trek fans and those wanting the Mission Impossible franchise to branch their world into TV. This will only further accelerate the pulling of licensed product off of Netflix, only putting further pressure on them to produce their own original content. Personally, I think at this point that Netflix should consider partnering if not merging with one of the remaining movie studios out there in order to secure a lot of existing IP which can't be taken away. The most prime movie studio candidates which could also benefit from this partnership would be Sony or Lionsgate. Both are somewhat struggling mid-size studios who don't have the content to be able to make a go at their own streaming platform.

I'd be really interested to see where The Boys on Amazon Prime lands on these rankings.

I'm planning on getting to it eventually. I've heard through the roof things. Problem is I've got a few Netflix seasons of different shows as higher priority right now due to my desire to cancel Netflix for a while. With Prime, I mooch off my sister's account, so it is there for me whenever. Based on the hype, I kind of wish I could just watch it right now.

Nathan Fillion is joining the cast of James Gunn’s Suicide Squad. Fillion has appeared in a majority of Gunn’s films so it’s not a big surprise. No word on who he will be playing, but had this film been made about 5-7 years ago he should have been Booster Gold.

Perhaps an even bigger announcement is that Taika Waititi may also be joining the cast of Suicide Squad as well. There are some outlets reporting this is a done deal and others saying a deal is still being ironed out, but it’s sounding like this is likely going to happen.

This looks great. I am fine with it being a one shot similar to Logan in an obscure way but based on some of the people's views towards the super hero genre, I hope they don't **** on the culture and at least respect the comic universe.

Director Andy Muschietti confirms that The Flash movie will be his next project, which means The Flash movie could start production earlier than later. HOWEVER, this is The Flash movie and we've been here before. Until I actually see people on set, I'm not going to get remotely excited. Personally, I'm excited to see Ezra Miller back in the role as I really liked him in Justice League, and this is coming from someone who DID NOT like his casting. I also thing they tabbed a really good director for the task. I just re-watched IT last night in anticipation for the sequel and man, that is a really well-made movie.

Per Variety:

DC Comics seems to be making a pointed effort to get fans to the theater. The trailer for its forthcoming film “Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)” will only be shown in cinemas before “It: Chapter Two” and won’t be available online, Variety has confirmed.

Surprising no one, the trailer has already leaked. You can read a description of the trailer in the link above.
