Going to work or school in the dark never bothered me. As a kid getting done with school and sports practice and it already being dark was soul crushing though. Afternoon and Evening daylight is just so much more useful than morning daylight.
You have to realize in December the days are just that much shorter. And it might not bother you but it bothers people that have kids walking to and from school or to the bus in the dark. It is about safety. Most kids are home from school by 4pm. Long before it gets dark with standard time in the winter.
By the time you get to high school and activities it doesnt matter if you change time or not it is still going to be dark by the time you get out. Days are just that short. But it makes use of the most of the daylight by changing it.
It also is to make the light coincide with the working day and school day as much as possible. Not many people understand it wont get light until 9 am half the winter if they dont switch or that it would be dark all summer by 8pm, and they would have daylight at 4:30am.
No switch does not work in a place like Iowa. For a number of reasons, including the distance we are from the equator, our agricultural industry, our kids, and many others.
Because the time switch is inconvenient for a few days does not make it a good Idea to make it inconvenient and unsafe for months.
