Perhaps posted earlier, but let's post it again from Seattle Times: CY WINS

College athletics
Iowa State's Cy is voted Capital One Mascot of the Year: After months of competition, Iowa State's Cy won the title of Capital One Mascot of the Year, edging Thundar from North Dakota State in the championship round.
"The fans have spoken, and named Cy as the BBOC — Big Bird on Campus," said Capital One's Steve Schooff, who said more than 4.5 million votes were cast in the 12-mascot competition.
The lone mascot from a Pac-10 school was UCLA's Joe Bruin.

I saw on the Iowa board that they were making fun of the award noticing that cy is a cardinal not a cyclone. I found it pretty amusing considering herky is a hawk not a hawkeye. Come to think of it, I'm not sure what exactly a hawkeye is.

If they actually knew some history, it makes complete sense.

And the term "hawkeye" supposedly comes from the book "Last of the Mohicans". A character in the book is named Hawkeye. Somehow, the name was used in nicknaming the state and it stuck. I'm foggy on the details.
