Honestly, it's probably the right move for him from a competition stand point. 4A hoops in Iowa is what it is...
depends what prep school he lands at

some of those janky diploma mill prep schools play JV squads, amish kids and homeschoolers

Wonder what’s up here? Has ISU not shown enough interest in him and he’s looking for greener pastures?

I don’t know if we have a spot for him in terms of a path to being a starter. Even guys that could be pretty good (like Stinson Jr.), but not quite at that “next level” are going to be turned off on ISU. We’ve established ourselves as one of the premier transfer destinations in CBB and there could be a potential all-conference level 21-23 yo old coming in at any time.

I don’t really understand the value of these prep schools anymore in the current state of transfer portal. My son is starting his freshman year in college and he was getting hit up hard to spend his senior year at a prep school and even this upcoming year after graduation.

During his recruiting process the discussion was always he needs to get older. After meeting with low major D1, D2, and JUCO schools they all talked about what the new journey looks like in the era of the portal. So he chose to start at a prominent JUCO and get stronger and older. He practiced and played pick up a lot with Curtis Jr and even though he’s a grade below my son Curtis Jr is older than my son. More power to anyone that wants to make a change they feel is best but the prep schools don’t offer “getting older” nor will it change their persona, playing style or exposure. Basketball recruiting has changed a lot over the last 4 years and I just don’t see the value in a prep school in this era. All of my sons AAU teammates/friends that went prep school route last year didn’t elevate their recruiting at all and it cost 15-20k.

Just my two cents after just going through all of this.

He's a fringe Top 150 kid that might not even be the best player on his team at Valley this year.

I think this is kind of a hail mary to get a Power school to look at him. Green Bay has been the most active with him over the summer.

UW Green Bay is his only offer in the last year. That is a pretty good indication that he hasn’t developed

I wonder with the expanding rosters next year Curtis could get a look. He seems like a good guy to take a flyer on. If he were to accept what his role would be I wouldn't mind taking some Iowa guys especially legacy recruits. Would take Curtis, who seems like a competitor, accepting he may just be a body here. Much like our current walk-on's.

Going to be interesting how to fill out 14-15 spots and managing playing time expectations.

Going to UWGB and ballin' out and transferring up isn't a bad way to bet on yourself.

Assuming that you can dominate the Horizon League like you should be able to.

If you can't, though, then maybe you're at the right level.

That is literally what a few Horizon and Summit schools told my son.

They pitched themselves as a potential path to larger schools if good enough. What spooked him was the fact most of these schools had 50-75 percent roster turnover annually.

...who doesn't...?

Iowa State lost 6 of its 13 scholarship players from last year.

46.2% and that's one of the more stable rosters in the country!

Agree completely. His concern was being an underclassmen, not playing much, and constantly getting recruited over in the portal and end up transferring anyways. Which happens at all 4 year levels.

At JUCO he will have a chance to play right away while he works on strength and development.

He was just leary of starting at a 4 year school in general after the hearing the bad experiences a few of his buddies a year or two ahead of him had.

With the pressure to max out the $22M extra benefits cap, I highly doubt MBB or WBB will exceed 12 schollies each. Bill has had 15 schollie cap for years and IIRC, he hasn't exceeded 12-13 for like the past 10 years. Even more reason now not to exceed that number in the future.

I think I've said it before but I'll say it again. Comparisons between WBB rosters and MBB rosters are not valid. In college WBB they have practice squads so they don't need those bodies at the end of a long bench to practice 5 v 5 even if struck by the injury bug. There are no practice squads in MBB so if you lose a few of your players even temporarily due to injury you need some of those end of bench guys to fill out the 5 v 5 in practice. I know there have been a couple of ISU MBB teams in the last decade or so that have been struck by the injury bug and reportedly couldn't practice 5 v 5 at least for a time due to numbers.
