If

Totally agree so 1) what's the advantage of him coming off the bench?
2) why should he have to?
When I was in HS our best player didn’t start for game due to discipline issues. He ended up coming in and having his best game of his life and told our coach he wanted to keep doing it cause he liked it. Not at all saying it’s the same thing but I guess I’ve seen it before

Jones - Iowa State
Gilbert - Iowa State
Lipsey - Iowa State
Dickinson - Kansas
Mayo - Kansas
Cryer - Houston
Roberts - Houston
Love - Arizona
Omier - Baylor
Toppin - Tech
Williams - Tech

99.9% chance POY in conference comes from that group. Clones keep winning games I like the odds of that hardware coming to Ames.

I don't think there is any way that Lipsey wins the POY. It would be pretty rare they award it to a player who isn't a pretty high volume scorer. Lipsey does a lot but only scoring ~10 a game probably gives him a near zero chance.

In addition to the floater, not really something he has developed but he has really great chemistry with Chatfield. Jones uses screens from Chatfield so well and he just seems to dribble around that 15 foot territory until his defender gets hung up and he catches a seem for an open layup. If Chatfields defender comes off for the block CuJo knows to just get it high off the glass for a rim crashing Chatfield for a wide open tip dunk. No flaws in his game right now. Playing at such an incredibly high level.
Absolutely agree! He and Chatfield compliment each other so much. Although Chatfield may not get credit for a lot of points or assists, he contributes significantly to so many baskets. Just quietly does the dirty work behind the scenes. The epitome of unselfishness.

The ISU trio will vulture each others votes. Hard to say someone is league POY when it isn’t obvious who the team MVP is.

A few thoughts there:

1.) Lipsey was the only Cyclone who was preseason 1st team all Big 12. Has some built up credit if you will.
2.) There is still a ton of conference season left. The Iowa State, Houston, Kansas matchups will be big. Which players have huge games in those contests?
3.) Jamal Shead won it in a landslide last year at 12.9 ppg.
4.) Lipsey is an ELITE defender and intangibles guy. Stuff that doesn't show up on stat sheet (see Jamal Shead).
5.) As of now, there is not really any clear and obvious leader/s in the clubhouse. Pretty wide open race between top 7 or 8 guys.

People are way too bent out of shape about whether or not Curtis starts.

He’s playing the second most minutes on the team (shortly behind Keshon), leading the team in scoring and third in assists/steals/rebounds.

His minutes and scoring is up during conference play so far. And he’s always in the court during crunch time. Played the last 8+ minutes and all of OT.

18 more minutes today than Milan.

If he really wanted to start or if there was any actual advantage to him doing so I’m sure TJ would facilitate.

of course it’s customary to put your best 5 players out there to start a game but it’s not the first time someone has been good enough to start but comes off the bench instead.

It’s crazy if you look at his juco stats and his first year at Buffalo. No way anyone could have predicted what he has become
I believe TJ and his staff sort of predicted it. After all, if they did not believe that he could rise to this level they would not have recruited him.

I can't remember if was the interview on the podcast with CW or something else, but TJ said pre-season that Curtis is the most improved player from last year.

Well they recruited him after his breakout year at Buffalo. If you notice his juco stats and first year at buffalo, which is what I said, his stats were not the greatest

Is it still advantageous to keep him as a 6th man? No one lecture me I understand the theory, but I also heard TJ say preseason that Milan would be a "shot hunter" this season and I'm not seeing that...... at all. I'm especially not seeing it in close games where we need him the most. Maybe Jones should start and Milan should have some incentive to earn it

Sometimes a guy just fits better off the bench.

And I sometimes wonder if Mikan drives TJ a little batty by not being more aggressive.

It’s also possible they Jones entrance often coincides with other team subbing out st which point there is some kind of advantage for us offensively.

But again - if there was an advantage to him starting he would surely do it. It’s that simple.

Agree Milan should be a focal point of offense next year. We really need a scoring guard who can get into the paint and create his own shot to compliment Milan.
