A guy with Iowa State pictures on Twitter, and signed a financial agreement to come here was never committed? How ******* stupid are you?

He's not ******* stupid enough to guarantee a bowl game for us last year. Not that level of stupid.

Watch the games and you would see that he completed a poor percentage against OSU but he actually had a really good game. Sure it couldn't been better but he had only started a couple games to that point. Completion percentage is a stupid stat when you look at it by itself is what I am saying. If he increases his competion % by 7% he will be sitting very good. That is not crazy jump to think a QB can improve that much from his soph to Jr year especially when he gets all the first team reps in the offseason.

I am not going to blame a QB for having a bad game when his coaching staff gets let go the week of. That is bound to be a bad game.

Also I brought up KSU because you noted that as proof he couldn't pass...
I watch every single game multiple times. I log the QB throws and I did that a lot last season. I gave evaluations after the games on here more than once. The completion percentage is not only accurate but it doesn't point out just how badly he missed WRs, especially in the short passing game. It also doesn't show how quickly/slowly he makes reads.

Lanning had been at iSu for three years working with the same QB coach on mechanics for three years. All the QBs work on mechanics. his mechanics aren't good. Similar to Tebow, similar to Klein simlar to Watters.

When I say Lanning can't pass, it is an evaluation of his overall passing game and body of work. Not one portion of it, not one game. Kansas St game highlighted his deep ball ability which is good. I just don't think he will have much deep passing ability next year because of the OL. his short passing game is bad. He isn't good down the middle of the field, short, mid or deep. He throws good to the sidelines. If I can figure that out then opposing coaches can as well and did.

I was originally asked how I wasn't excited for offense next year. That is why.

Will he get all the snaps? Or will Park and Noland have a chance to unseat him?

BTW- KSU is a statistical outlier. 1 game in five. The other four...51.4% or worse

Why is taz being such a dic$? Maybe we should have hired him to coach instead of Campbell since he seems too know everyone's ceiling before they even get there.

Nice try. I comment about Lanning and it is after he has played. Otherwise I haven't commented on anyone's ceiling.

I am real excited about the last two classes Rhoads brought in and Campbell's first class. A ton of potential but they will be young.

Maybe I should ignore that Campbell/Manning rebuilt the OL last year with five upperclassmen and we return one starterwho had surgery and will miss sproing ball. Ignore Philbert had knee issues, and the only other returning starter is a walk on who played one game. Maybe I should ignore Lanning's weaknesses and maybe I should overhype the iSU WR corp like everyone else. I have been a iSu fan too long, seen too many coaching changes/coordinator changes to know transitions on offense aren't easy unless you have talent galore. I have been an iSu fan too long to know we need a great OL to be a winner and we need depth because injuries are inevitable.

I won't apologize for saying what I see. Nor having realistic expectations that I hope get blown out of the water. I hope the coaching staff proves me 100% wrong

Taz, keep it up - your responsible, reasonable AND interesting commentary, that is.

We have serious lineup problems; if not, why did we go through a forced coaching change three months ago?

This new coaching staff has a ton of work to do, and I'll bet most of we fans know it. Don't give me pablum, I want critical analysis. And you, Taz, provide a great starting point for reasonable discussion on several issues of football concern.

Here is a good reason why Rhoads failed. for people that think it doesn't start up front this should be eye opening.

HS OL recruits from 2010-13

  1. Farniok (knee)-missed multiple games-All Big 12 Honorable Mention 12',13'14'
  2. Omoile (knee)-missed one game-
  3. Gannon (knee)-missed four gamesAll Big 12 Honorable Mention 2014
  4. Burton (knee)- missed games and ended career early
  5. Dunning (knee)-missed a season and ended career early
  6. Dagel (knee/elbow)-missed most of a season and played injured and part time last season
  7. Loth (knee)-career ending
  8. Dika (knee)-career ending
  9. Graham (back)-career ending
  10. Campos (undisclosed surgery)
  11. Glenn(back)-missed a season
  12. Williams (never fully recovered form HS knee issues and transferred to a lower level)
  13. Caspers (transfers out)- Northern St and ended up in Vikings minicamp
  14. Severs (transfers out)
  15. Homa-
  16. Curtis-
  17. Lalk(MCL sprain)-missed multiple games-2nd team all Big 12
Sam Tautoloa was the onlky JUCO

Thank goodness we changed recruiting philosophy to thicker guys and thank goodness Herman took Yancy. Injuries seem to follow Yancy around

Campbell's comments on the OL

"“The O-Line is still probably the biggest challenge for us as we go into spring and the biggest question mark. This a group that needs to continue to grow and get stronger. It’s a wide open race. Obviously, with Jake Campos injured and having off-season surgery, it will hurt us. But I am proud to see how hard he is working to get back. He’s been a leader for us. It’s been great to see that and you want to see that from your veteran guys. The other young man that has stood out to us is Nick Fett. Nick is a guy that has high-end ability. He only started in one game last year, but when he did play, I thought he showed up and played well. You talk about strength, you talk about power, you talk about wanting to get better day in and day out, Nick has really stood out. There’s a plethora of other guys. Jaypee Philbert Jr. has played a lot of football in this group. He’s got ability. He’s played in Big 12 football games, so it will be really interesting to see him grow. I’m really intrigued by some young guys in the program. Julian Good-Jones is a kid that when you talk about the highest ceiling of any player on the football team, he’s right there. We have some other guys in that mix. Bryce Meeker, a young freshman, and Shawn Curtis have both stood out to us. You are going to see a million combinations, a million different guys in and out, and it will be our job to find the right fit. But what I know is that we’ll find seven guys. My goal is to find seven guys by the time we get out of fall camp that we feel can play and give us quality reps. I think it’s just development, fundamentals and just continuing to get bigger, stronger and faster."

It might give some warm fuzzies but there is some obvious concern. Love what he says about Fett. Everything is else is pretty guarded praise.

Campbell On The Quarterbacks

“I think the top priority is to identify what can Joel Lanning do for us. We have been able to watch him and we have seen him have great success on the football field. We need to harness his ability. And then we have a great opportunity to watch what these young guys can do. We’ve been pleasantly surprised early on through some of the winter workouts of the athletic ability of a guy like Dominic De Lira and what he brings to the table. Zeb Noland is also an exciting prospect. Here’s a young pup who will get some great opportunities this spring to really fit into the offense. We also have two walk-ons. Kyle Starcevich has great ability and has shown that he can throw the ball. Kyle Kempt, a young man who also transferred in at semester, is going to get some looks. So we have five guys who we will try to get as much reps to create competition in the 15 practices. The position starts with Joel, and we really want to see what he can do because we’ve already seen that he can win football games in this conference

Nice try at what? I just think you're being condescending, and normally you aren't.

Nice try was you saying I knew everyone's ceiling that we hadn't seen. I only commented on one player's ceiling and we have seen him.

Not trying to be condescending at all. I just see a lot of hurdles with the OL, don't buy the Joel Lanning hype and have been bitten by the "we have the greatest WRs" bug too many times.

I hope like hell the staff works a miracle with the OL, Joel Lanning is the second coming of Klein/Tebow, and Lazard is as explosive as Harper/Thompson/Cooper/Hernandez and Ryen is as versatile as Lockett/Harvin.

I will be very happy to to eat hawkeye. I just am sick and tired of unrealistic expectations heaped upon new coaching staffs. We have seen it in basketball, we saw it when Rhoads changed to Mangino and then Sturdy, etc.

We haven't seen an iSu player drafted since...Bibbs or Bykowski? Were they even drafted? Rhoads biggest issue was recruiting talent. Good talent has been successful at iSu we just haven't had enough. That doesn't change over night.

I'm confused now. Second coming of Klein and Tebow? Those guys had terrible arms, worse than Joel's. I would argue he has every bit as much running potential as both those players. Weren't you just criticizing him for being too much like those players earlier?

I like having young talent that they see a lot of ability in, but it is too bad they will have to play so early. Hopefully it pays off in the long run

Could be wrong but wasn't Toledo's OL completely made up of new starters last year? Wasn't Tom Manning named FootballScoop's OL COY?

Not saying there shouldn't be any concern, but I'd like to give this staff a chance.

Lanning is a lot like Klein and Tebow. llanning may have a stronger arm but that is it. Klein was more accurate and always had a better mental game. Tebow was a winner. Llanning is similar...a Good power runner, can suck a defense in and throws a good long ball over the top. Never said he couldn't. Said he needs an OL to do it because the rest of his passing game is bad. I was asked how I couldn't be excited for this offense. That is where this discussion started. Lanning does not excite me without a line that can establish a run game. He can't win with the short passing game or even across the middle.

Now next year after the OL is put together, different story.

That team could have easily been bowling, did you not see all the games we blew?
But they didn't and they lost four starters on the OL another that has had off season surgery. That is where games are won and lost
