I dug up some old #'s that I had pulled together a while back, because this year's team seemed to thrive in close games which is unique.

I first put this chart together in 2022 when Campbell was getting a ton of heat for all the close losses. It shows that while Campbell has had a lot of close losses in his tenure, many of those are games that under previous regimes would have likely been blowout losses. I updated the chart with the 2024 results and it really shows the results of the winning in the margins culture that Campbell has instilled in the Cyclones football program.

Those McCarney and Rhoads -15+ games are horrid. And that’s exactly why they deservedly got fired.

Also of note, of those 8 where the margins of loss was 15+, 4 of them came in year 1.

The other 4:
Bowl vs Notre dame
Louisiana 2020 (potential COVID issues prior to game)
TCU kicking our ass for style points in the last week of 2022
At Oklahoma last year.

Those teams were also highly ranked:
Notre Dame finished # 12
Louisiana finished # 15
TCU finished #2
Oklahoma finished #15

25 of the 44 came after year 6. Mccarney was great for ISU and I love him dearly, but that trend wasn’t breaking. It was getting worse.
Oh, no question it was time for him to go, but he inherited a situation that was so much more dire than anyone else on that list that it is understandable. We didn't have the talent to compete with anyone in D1 when he got there.

I never said he didn’t but I responded to you saying a bulk of those came trying to dig the program out of a hole. Partially true, but he had 23 of those losses after 2000. I miscounted the first time around.

If you really look at things, it’s crazy how much better Campbell is than any other coach we’ve had.
