A win today and the Cubs will reach 90 wins in a season for just the sixth time since 1945. So in the nearly 70 years from '46-'14 they won 90 games five times, I would not be surprised at all if they match that number from 2015-2020.

And that's why I don't believe in any curses around the Cubs, baseball playoffs are always a small sample size crapshoot, all you can do is get in as much as possible and hope for a little luck. When you're making the playoffs only once or twice a decade, the odds aren't in your favor. It's not black cats or Bartman or goats, it's just a team that's been poorly run for over half a century, but those days ended once Theo took over.

It's all about getting hot at the right time. Just look at the 2006 St. Louis Cardinals team that only won 83 games which was the worst record of all the playoff teams that year and they won the World Series.

Looking at match ups the rest of the way, I think the Cubs have to go 7-3, maybe 8-2 in the last 10 to at least tie the Pirates. The Cubs can hopefully take 2 of 3 from the Pirates this weekend.

With their match ups, I only see the Pirates taking 1 from the Cardinals next week. They should win 2 of 3 against the Reds in their last series, but with the way they have played against the Reds this season, I would not be shocked if they only got 1. My guess right now is the Pirates will finish 97-65.

Cubs are at 89 wins right now. Get 3 of the final 4 home games. Hendricks vs Ventura will be a tough one on Monday night. I do like the Cubs chances in their final 6 with the potential match ups they have. Wouldn't be surprised to see them get 5 of those final 6.

As a Reds fan, I'm torn on who to root for, Pittsburgh or Chicago. I do know that there is no way in hell I'll ever root for St. Louis.

That said, while I like the playoff format, I don't like the fact the winner of pirates/Cubs have to play the cards (assuming season plays out this way).

It's a joke that of the three best records in the entire major leagues, only one will get a chance to play in the NLCS. That rule needs to change when the records are like they are this year.

Agree. Im fine with the Cubs and Pirates playing in the Wild Card because winning your division should mean something, but I think MLB should "re-seed" once the wild card games are determined. 9 times out of 10 the wild card game winner is going to play the best record in their league; this year is definitely an outlier.

Castro shouldn't be playing shortstop at all for this team. They've got two better players at the position, just no excuse for putting him there.

IMO, the Cubs need to end Lester having the designated catcher in Ross. Ross is hitting .180 and Lester has two career hits. Really limits the offense. Lester has been involved in several low scoring games the Cubs have lost.

Gonna be tough for the Cubs to host the one-game playoff unless they find a way to get this win today

Agree completely. Lester has been better lately, but he still allows around 2-3 every 7 innings (actually think ERA formula should be tweaked for starters, or have an "effective ERA" or something that corresponds to average innings/start...maybe that's already an advanced metric). If he was pitching like Arrieta, I wouldn't have any issue with who was catching, but he's not. Cubs need a bit more offense in his starts.

ERA stands for earned run average, which is how many runs a pitcher gives per 9 innings. So it really doesn't matter if it's a reliever or starter, they're both accounted for the same way.

If you give up 3 runs in one 9 inning ballgame or 3 runs over 9 separate one inning outings, the end result is the same 3.0 ERA.

I understand how ERA is calculated.
