While Perault was a complete DB on his show and particularly in this conversation, his point was relatively valid with regard to both Hoiberg and Pollard. Hoiberg's hire saved JP in my opinion.

It's true, he addressed a concern many fans had. It was fun hearing Walters be so feisty.

In a way, their on-air exchange was similar to an argument I had inside my head at the time, as I tried to decide what I thought about the hire. I loved it in theory and considering the situation, energizing the fan base and providing hope at least in short-term made as much sense as anything. It's easy to forget in retrospect how much weight the "no coaching experience" aspect had.

I need more. Attending Iowa State from 2011-2015 and having student tickets was an amazing ride. Those four years full of countless stories and memories will be with me for the rest of my life.

I was nearly inconsolable when Freddy left. I have a framed Hoiberg drawing that I purchased at the campus book store. I received a Hilton Magic flag at a women’s game in 2013 that I brought to every single home game. This flag still hangs right above my computer monitors at work, booze stained and all.

I think one of my favorite memories was attending College Game Day. I had to work right after the Game Day show, hungover and bored I got the genius idea to create 3 foam posters of Julian, Ricky, and Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys. The posters ended up on ESPN that night. I think that was the best 60 dollars I ever spent. The camp out preceding this game in order to lock down a ticket is also a great memory. My buddy and I ended up scoring a Sips VIP card that granted us a few hours of free drinks that night. We ended up back at the tent and he finished off a gallon of apple pie and banged around the cinnamon stick inside the jug like he was going to war.

I may live in Des Moines now, but for three years I lived directly West of Hilton on Beach. The place will always be a second home. Keep the episodes coming!!!!

Class of 2015, represent. The one semester I spent as the flag runner for both men and women games was the best.

I remember listening to that exchange live and it got me fired up. I had some reservations about them hiring Fred but once it actually happened I felt like we were all taking crazy pills but everyone was 100% behind Fred. You can't be a Cyclone fan and not get behind the mayor. That was reflected in Walters reaction.

I think people were cautiously optimistic. We were behind him and excited to have him coach, but we’re worried about what would happen if he failed. Thankfully it worked out.

I remember EXACTLY where I was when this all went down - the announcement and the ensuing Walters-Perrault exchange. I had a summer mowing business and was listening on my headphones/mp3-radio. I was ecstatic when I heard the Hoiberg news. I, too, was concerned by the lateness of the McD announcement and really concerned about "who would want the ISU job?" I guess I had faith that CFH would at least do EVERYTHING in his power to get Cyclone Hoops respectable again. I'm still amazed at how fast he got this done.

It was sweet to relive what went down after GM went to Creighton, especially since, with hind sight, every thing turned out great.

I'm really liking the production value and podcast format/vibe you guys have going. It's just a great way to tell a story.

Looking forward to #2 in the series.

John Walters sounds even better in hindsight every time I go over that initial reaction.

Everyone in his position is a bit of a homer but some are brilliant about it and some are foolish. Walters really knows his stuff and can cut through the BS whether it's positive or negative BS.

Great content! But I was expecting a 30 for 30 type video format. Get Van Winkle on that.

That would be awfully tough when we don't own rights for game footage and can't really travel all over the country doing interviews.

The only thing that didn't age well out of Walters owning Perrault was them talking about what a great hire Rhoads was. In hindsight it was the right hire at the time, but not the right hire for the long term.

I remember listening to that live and laughing my ass off at how quickly Matt starting back pedaling and getting defensive when someone finally called him on his ********.

CW, what was it like witnessing that exchange? IIRC you and Hassel just stepped back from the mics and watched the world burn for that segment.

Great podcast. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

One piece of constructive criticism (minor). Minimize the references to where people are now, such as Matt A being at St. John's. Just say that Matt A went from Iowa State to St. John's.

I only say this because these podcasts have the potential to be classics that document a part of history for long into the future and for people far beyond our fan base.
