Great podcast. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

One piece of constructive criticism (minor). Minimize the references to where people are now, such as Matt A being at St. John's. Just say that Matt A went from Iowa State to St. John's.

I only say this because these podcasts have the potential to be classics that document a part of history for long into the future and for people far beyond our fan base.
I didn't understand what you were criticizing at first (I'm slow), but once I understood I think you make a great point. A point that wouldn't matter if the podcast were crap, but only comes into play because it's so good. The less it ties to present day, the better it ages. In a way your "criticism" should be taken as very high praise for the podcast.

After listening to that its hard to imagine why Fred left, glad he reached his goal but man he had it made in the shade here.

Some people will never understand how much he truly hated recruiting. Back on topic, great podcast! Can't wait for the second one

And the apex of college basketball coaching is pretty big $$$. It's not like Izzo or Coach K have made less than most NBA coaches, they've made drastically more than the vast majority.

I get that coaches don't like recruiting but your assistants can help you recruit. Assistants can't coach a 100ish game season instead of a 35ish game season. That's a ton of time on the road. Looking at 50-65 road games vs probably 15-20.

To me it's more about the challenge than the money or something easier. Coaching in the NBA is one of the hardest things in the world, it's not easier in any way. More than any other sport the NBA coach of the year REGULARLY gets fired within a year of winning the award. I can think of four cases off the top of my head just in the past couple decades where coach of the year was almost immediately fired. One of them went on to win a championship shortly after he was fired.

That would be awfully tough when we don't own rights for game footage and can't really travel all over the country doing interviews.

I'm sure that's true yet somehow obnoxious morons get paid on Youtube for obviously breaking the same laws.

We might be obnoxious sometimes but I like to think we avoid the morons category the majority of the time.

Not even remotely obnoxious.

If you were an obnoxious Youtuber you'd have had to start this podcast with "Hey Guys, JStanz51 here..."

Yes, that was the point. These are so good, I want them to be distributed as far and for as long as possible. This may become the definitive source for perspective on a major change in college recruiting.

Someone help with my memory here, but I recall Hoiberg walked into a situation where ISU had something like 3 seniors, 1 junior and 3 or 4 freshmen on scholarship his 1st year.

To me the transfers were not just an immediate talent upgrade, but also served another purpose. Had he recruiting only high school kids, he has about 90% of his scholarships tied up with freshman/sophomores in year 2. By staggering the classes, the transfers made perfect sense. With 8 or 9 guys in 2 classes, you're looking at a logjam of players, and the young guys on the bench might not see the eventual light at the end of the tunnel. Especially since they'd be at the back of the pack, surrounded by players in their same class/age.

I also recall the hawk fans being intolerable as Fred brought in the transfers that first year. Iowa had a better situation with about 2 scholarships in each class, and a staggered roster. A luxury Fred didn't have right off the bat. I think Fred was 4-1 vs Iowa.

This is a good point. I hope that CW gets into the way that Hoiberg was ridiculed for taking transfers . . . before everyone else started doing it too, including those who ridiculed him.

The whole board at that time was hilarious - we had Baghdad Bob, kg-cyclone telling us all was well and we were trying to talk ourselves into prospects like Bo Barnes. Jaime gave the anti-transfer PC right before McD bolted. The program Fred took over could not have been more disfunctional.

Agree it is a great piece. Only feedback is the 4-5 times Williams mentions about being at a bachelor party when the story broke was a little excessive but that is his style in both verbal and written communication. May just be a me thing that finds it annoying.

The production reminded me a lot of those Serial podcasts, which are some of the most popular in the world. Well done!
