Since 1993:
7 major hurricanes have hit florida (Cat 3 or higher)
I didn't bother to count minor hurricanes or tropical storms.
not to mention, a hurricane doesn't have to make landfall to cause damage, either. Every year, Florida is threatened by hurricanes and tropical storms that cause injuries, deaths, and damage.

Who gives a s*** about tailgating this weekend? Come on man, my city is about to get destroyed for the second time in 8 years. Have some perspective and some respect.
Amazing how people like NWICY are so focussed on their own little bubble and have not a damn clue what could potentially happen outside of their bubble. In 48 hours, thousands of people could be without homes, businesses in a downtown that is still rebuilding after the last flood are gone again, and people could be out of work yet NWICY is worried about tailgating..

I remember one hangup where CR wanted to protect both sides of the river and the Gov/Army Corp of Engineers only recommended protecting the east side of the river. Don't know if that was a cause of the delay.

I recall Quaker Oats investing in their own flood protection. I wonder if they completed that or not.

Quaker did build their wall with the expectation that the city would build one also. Quaker's wall is useless because the city didn't hold up their end so now the water can just flow around it. They are not gonna me happy campers.

Never once did he say his only concern was tailgating, just mentioned that it would be an issue in a post, that actually mentioned other things like levees breaking in Clarksville. Assuming you have no idea who the guy is, so quit trying to interpret his thoughts and feelings on the situation by a single comment he typed in a post.

Partially so, but also they got tired of waiting for the city to do something. If the city would have accepted the Army Corps recommendations, they would have gotten funding for the east side already. But instead they threw a tantrum and said both sides or nothing, and the fed. govt called their bluff.

A hurricane hadn't hit Florida in 10 years prior to Hermine and it's a couple thousand times bigger than the city of CR. So you're comparison is laughable, but carry on.

Yeah and a major flood hasn't hit CR in 8 years prior to this, and 15 years prior to that one. Meanwhile Florida was hit by 6 major hurricanes in one 14-month stretch.

I lived on the NE side back in 08 and remember watching the news the night before about where the river would be when it was to crest.

I will never forget driving south on 380 the next morning and coming around the corner to see the water over the bridges to Ellis island. I literally said "holy ****" it was unbelievable.

We didn't live anywhere near the river but we had water in our basement. The water table was just so high from all of the rain it didn't have anywhere to go and started coming in the foundation. Not a ton just enough to make the floor wet but nothing compared to the businesses and homes that had several feet of water.

Are you kidding me?

If the only things people can talk about are tragedies we might as well shut down the site. I don't expect to see anymore posts from you about football or basketball. How many thousands of Syrian refugees are without homes? Or do they not matter since they don't live here?

Good God man...

I wasn't here in '93, but the river only reached 19' then, I don't think it was really a "major" flooding event here.

Except this is a thread specifically discussing the flooding in Cedar Rapids.

I was in CR in 93 and it absolutely was a major flooding event. Ask anyone who was there. It didn't compare to 08 because the situation in 08 was pretty unimagineable.

I stand corrected. I was here for a flood in 2004 that reached 18' and I don't remember much damage, but that was a long time ago.

I was in Dubuque in 93, between years from ISU. I don't recall the CR flooding at that time and Dubuque was protected by their flood wall. Davenport, of course, was flooded as usual. Most of the media was focused on DM and Ames (which were both hit hard) during that flood and overshadowed CR.

You may be thinking of another year. The 93 flood crested at just under 20 feet in CR which at the time was the worst flood in the state's recorded history.

Again, because an entire state with an area of 65,755 square miles is the same as Cedar Rapids Iowa. Gonzo's original post made it sound like people are dumb for living in Florida because there's a hurricane on a regular basis. There's not, oh and it's a state, so it's not even remotely comparable.

Follow the thread man. Some suggested it was stupid for someone to live near the river in Cedar Rapids because it has flooded bad a few times. Others just suggested that people live in risky places all of the country (like Florida). No one suggested that people shouldn't live in Florida. They were just defending why it wasn't stupid for people to live in Cedar Rapids.

I don't disagree, I'm just saying it was a poor example to use. I expect that type of example out of Hawks43, not Gonzo. I hold him in higher esteem than that.
