Whoa. Does this imply he believes the overall level of play at the top is going to drop a bit from this season?

Is it odd for BYU to not be in everybody's top ten every year now? They were ranked this year, seem well coached and they get their pick of nearly any player they want going forward. Seems most of their targets are chosing to be the highest paid college player over any weirdness of BYU campus life.

Way up there
The portal will obviously change things but from the looks of all of these "too early" polls (I've seen a dozen or so) we'll be a top 15-ish team in all the preseason rankings. There are a lot of them that have us a lot higher than that.

With Lipsey, Milan, and Jefferson back there is no reason we can't be really good, and of course TJ is an excellent coach. We just need to hit on at least one freshman, and hopefully 2 or 3 can contribute.
Is my ignorant assumption that ISU needs at least one star from the portal to not take a step back totally flawed?

I mean, I still think our ranking was legitimate this year when we were at full health, which was a top 5 team. We just had a lot of injuries and we're never at full health after Lipsey broke his finger. I don't think we'll be quite that good next year, but who knows. I think with those 3 we are a legit top 15 team and then see where we go from there with the unknown variables.

Maybe, maybe not. Keep in mind there are basically two full senior classes aging out because of the COVID year finally being gone. So, 40% (2 out of 5 classes) will be leaving. Basketball is about to get a lot younger and we’re bringing back 3 all-conference caliber players.

Sorry, I meant in absolute terms, not relative. Presumably Parrish has some idea of returning rosters as of now.

No doubt the returning core is fantastic, but losing Jones and Gilbert is massive.

College basketball was stupid old this year and it doesn’t get talked about enough.

Yes, that is absolutely wrong. We need a couple role players from the portal - and we’ve gotten two key ones.

We likely need one more or a freshman to step up - but there’s absolutely no reason to believe that won’t happen.

Next year is Tamins team, of course, with Jefferson being the star. Milan is a great second option and Heise will be the “glue guy”. They need 40 minutes of post play (Buchanan provides 25, Pleta/Mulder may be the other 15). Plus a scorer off the bench (Williams) and a backup point (UVU kid or Toure).

They’ll be really good next year again. Don’t be afraid to hope.

edit: fixed the names

“There is absolutely no reason to believe that a freshman won’t step up”.

C’mon, that’s kinda a ridiculous statement. No reason?

I think we can be good, but don’t put that expectation or “hope” on guys who have yet to put a jersey on and have yet to play a minute of college basketball.

I would love to see Tamin get back to playing PG. I think his injuries had the biggest impact on our style of play down the stretch, and we just couldn’t get the rhythm back when forced to play him off the ball.

If that EWU transfer is pretty good then this team will be very good. Without him I still think this squad is solid enough to be a tourney team as long as injuries don't affect us as much as they did this year.

I didn’t say that, did I? The portal is only about 25% done- we’ll sign at least one more.

This is exactly what I have been thinking. The COVID nonsense is finally (mostly) over.
