Shocked when I saw this thread was still going. So I might as well keep it going with my worthless opinion.

Nothing grinds my gear more than when I’m in a long line, and checking out is taking even longer because someone is up there counting their change to pay in cash. Just use your card, watch, phone, etc and you are done in 10s or less.

Our recent beer trailer at a fund raiser was 9200 cash and 4100 card. Ain't dead.
Trailer sales as well, not beer
In 2022, did $17200 in cash and $24000 in card
In 2023, did $24600 in cash and $34100 in card
Both years it was about a 40/60 split cash/credit

We were in England this summer and a ton of places are cashless, FWIW.
Even our hotel front desk, when I asked them to make change, could not, as they were 100% cashless.
I’ve been to Europe twice in the last 10 months and never even bothered to withdraw local currency. Never needed to. Quite sad really. Now I don’t have random
Swedish crowns or Hungarian Forints in my change jar.

Silly question time because traveling abroad is something I don't do often. Do your credit cards automatically make the conversions without big fees?

It depends. If you have a premium travel card, they claim they don’t charge any fees. I’m not 100% they don’t recoup some of that with less than favorable exchange rates though. I haven’t compared that too much.

I traveled overseas this summer and used basically all credit card. The Euro - Dollar conversion was pretty much right on the current exchange rate and there were no transaction fees (have a Chase CC). The thing there was that all the places I went used wireless card readers that came to your table so your card never left your hand.

Europe has been this way for a while. Most dont even pay bills with anything but card or digital transfers. Even for Rent or utilities. I have seen many Europeans say they havent seen a check in Decades, didnt even realize they existed anymore, and cant believe the US still uses them.
And most say they pretty much exclusively use cards or digital payments.

They also are shocked how far behind we are, with things like pin for payments on cards, and cant believe we do things like give our cards to waiters etc.

I haven’t carried cash in probably 15 years.
I switched back to cash only and auto withdrawa - deposits about 10 years ago. Admittedly I am pretty "thrifty" but it is amazing how much additional money I saved when I had to "dig" the cash out of my wallet. It was far to easy for me to tack on an extra $3-$5 point of purchase buy. Paying cash eliminates that for me.

Generally, credit cards don't rip you off with conversion rates. They are pretty fair (way better than what you would get at a currency counter at an airport).

Just make sure it's a credit card with no "FTF" (Foreign Transaction Fee)

Message me if you need specifics.
