wiring up my garage and i have an odd scenario where i am running romex wire within a wall cavity and jumping off of that to an exposed area where conduit would be required. Basically going from inside a wall to outside a wall. could that potentially cause a heat buildup or some other problem i am unaware of? is that against some sort of national electrical code violation?

If you use a junction box might be ok. I'm not an electrician though. Just call your local municipality and ask them directly. They're always very helpful.

You are exactly right about the heat. Don't run the romex through the conduit. Just have a junction box where your work meets and you will be fine.

I have it is literally impossible to speak with a human on the phone in that building. Leave message that will never be returned is the best case scenario. very frustrating.

so, just strip the sheathing off of the wire i have and run it through the cable then? Im guessing you can just buy wire at home depot that doesn't have the sheathing for jobs exclusively using conduit?

I guess you could do that that. Normally you pull individual wire strands through conduit. Could always call an electrician and ask.

Just buy the size you need and strip to length.

You can most definitely run romex, it's just not smart if you have hook ups in the run and wont pull well with multiple 90s

thanks all. I'm just a dumb home owner trying to save a little money on wiring up a new garage. trying to take care of all of the dumb rough in work and then the electrician will come in and do all the "smart" work. Just trying to make sure he doesn't have to redo anything i've done. he's starting monday and I didn't wan't to bother him on the weekend. Thus, the question to this board.

If you're using a 20 amp breaker make sure it's 12 gauge wire. If it's 30 you need 10 gauge.

I really appreciate that for a fairly straightforward question (excluding local code quirks), it has taken all of 15 posts for every possible answer to be given. Never change, CF.
