Campustown is looking to a brighter future, with the theater proposal and this new parking facility, traffic will hopefully pick up in the area.

Federal funding for 25% of the cost isn't too bad. I hope we can find the other 75%, rather than having to cut out a whole ton of stuff just to make the project cheaper. They had a really great design in the proposal, and I can't see legitimate arguments for cutting out any components that would not detract from the usefulness of the facility, aside from maybe the two small retail areas. (But even those- a coffee shop and bike shop- would be useful services.)

Yeah, it looks like a great idea, especially combined with that other proposal out there for redeveloping that chunk of campustown.

Congratulations to Ames and Dubuque to receiving funding for their projects. But there were far superior and needed projects out there for IA than those two.

what would you have suggested? you cant just say that without proposing an alternative.

The following two are safety improvements that are desperately needed:
I-80 through Council Bluffs Safety Improvements and Bridge Replacement
I-74 Iowa-Illinois Corridor Improvements
Those two are easily justified in my opinion, mainly due to safety concerns and how highly traveled those two routes are. I would choose safety over new intermodal facilities that will reduce air emissions and add parking spaces.
I would have also liked to have seen the Des Moines Grant selected as well. It was to continue MLK PKWY all the way to HWY 65. This would provide a better route to downtown from the SE side, but also draw in more jobs for the large industrial park planned as well.
By no means am I saying that Ames and Dubuque weren't qualified for the money, I was just stating my opinion as to what I believe should have been granted first.

Then those local jurisdicitions should've submitted proposals. Or you should've. These weren't just handouts.

Have you drove on Highway 30 lately:sad:

Wow, no kidding. The last month or two has really beat the **** out of Highway 30 between Boone and 35. Not sure what the rest of its like though, it was never that bad before.

It has been really bad on the single lane section between cedar rapids and Tama for about 2 years now, and is only getting worse. Like driving on a washboard

The project could have some really cool impacts. There is a possibility that they will close the 100 and 200 Block of Welch Ave to vehicle traffic. If any of you have been on the 3rd street promenade in Santa Monica this is what the community can look forward to, only on a smaller scale. The City would love to make Campustown more than a place to get drunk on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night.

Exactly, If they don't get that fixed this summer I'll be finding an alternate route to Boone. I do worry though, that it may have gotten bad enough that they may not be able to just simply resurface. The sections of the base road are broken apart to the point that if you resurface it, it'll just do the same thing next year. If they have to completely redo that section it'll be a mess for a long time.

Not as long as the fire station is there, unless they completely redo the station to give them access off Chamberlain.

I remember hearing a few years ago about a plan to move the fire station and turn it into a community center. If they did that, they could close the 100 block, but unless the post office and Kum n Go moves they won't close the 200 block.

They start working on Hwy 30 between Boone and Ames this summer.
