right times is key to staying in the game and not letting things get out of hand. Right after we cut the game to 2 points. The game started to get out of hand.

I just wish in the second half when Kansas stole the ball from us on the inbound that we would have called a timeout and maybe stopped the bleeding. When Kansas did that they went up 6, then they hit a three and then got another basket and the game was pretty much over.

If you want to be successful in the Big 12 there is very little room for error. We are playing better, but we cannot continue to make these mistakes or we will never get over the hump.

In my opinion when we got screwed on the goaltending and coach Mac should have sent his team a message and went ballistic with the refs. Get a T for once and show your team and fans the passion you have for Cyclone basketball as well as your coaching career. Fight for us, as a cyclone fan i beg you!!!!

It continues to amaze me that people think the main issues with this team are timeout usage and technical fouls.

It continues to amaze me how you feel it necessary to go after the posters personally that raise issues with mcdermott.

timeouts are extremely important in stopping momentum. Now would we have won the game? Probably not, but i would like to give this team the best chance to win. Regardless of the circumstances, they deserve it.

i was thinking first half i guess. he called one then down 7. regardless it is pointless to continue to harp about to's. why not just be proud of how the team battled on the road against the best team in the nation.

the point is you can't let them go on the 9-0 run. Everyone knew that it was highly likely that Kansas would go on a run. You have to be proactive and stop the 21-3 run as a whole before it happens. Stop the run after a lazy extremely poor play on the in-bounds pass and let your team have it. You can't do that on the road period or you are asking for the opposing team and crowd to go crazy. That is a big part of the reason for the snowball effect that ensued after the turnover. As for the 12-3 run, our team is fragile and cannot handle big runs like that and recover quickly. When is the last time we played a tough opponent and then we went on a run of our own to combat it. It hasn't happened in a long time, especially against a ranked opponent.

i am proud of the teams effort, it is about giving our players the best opportunity to win the game. If you do not do that as a coach, you are or will be a failure. I am sure any coach would tell you that. It is about giving your players a chance to win. To put it another way it is about putting players in a position to excel.

I agree with OP about the timeout.

I do not agree with getting T'd up over the goaltending or ever needing to get T'd up just because.

Here's where I question your logic- you want coach to use a timeout after a 4-0 run by the other team right? But you also want him to get T'd up which gives KU 2 FT's and the ball, or potentially a 5 point possession?

I agree that our margin for error is slim, so I don't like the idea of giving the other team free points. I also don't think you can waste timeouts every time a team goes on a 4-0 run.

It just seems like Coach mac waits too long to call the timeout.

Although they haven't been good coming out of timeouts this year either.

Mac was waiting for the under 12 minute media time out on the next whistle, that came at 11:09......When Tyrel Reed made that shot after a Missed Ham lay-up and a CB jumper, Greg could not wait any longer....

It was a Coaching decision (most would wait-imo) to wait or the under 12 TO, it just did not work out...

You are correct. There are so many things wrong with this team, it's hard to pinpoint it on just a couple of things. I don't know if I'd put technical fouls on that list. But, I think that timeout usage would probably be on the list, along with ball handling, free throws, three point shooting, finishing in the lane, rebounding about everything other game, etc. etc. etc...

And the game was lost at that point.

Front end misses of one and ones are a major issue of notoriety for our team. We show little displeasure when we miss. Why? Is that our team pysche? The Big 12 people usually look grumpier when they miss a free throw.

Here is my stance on things.
When you are a VERY shot on players and are playing a team that loves to run you must find a way to use all of your time outs. This is Larry Coaching 101.

You call a time out before the media timeouts when the game is getting a little bit unfriendly...
In this case.
12:39 Diante Garrett Turnover. 38-42 would have been a good time for this.

Not saying this would have helped anything, but it takes the crowd out of it and then you get another break shortly with the media time out.

How do you know they are going on a big run? 9-0 runs are a dime a dozen and we dont have unlimited time outs for every game. Second guessing the time out usage is pretty easy after the game.
