It was Pancheros, but not the chain.

Did that open in '94-'95? I remember (sorta) some place that had a 2lb burrito on Welch. I was thinking it was between Cy's and Kinkos.

It was Panchero's. Back then there were only 2 locations, Ames and Iowa City. Home of the El Gordo 2 lb. burrito and it was glorious.

Just my humble opinion but you've never had Panchero's unless you ate at one of the two original locations.

Wow, remembered the burrito place but did not remember it was a Panchero's.

The El Gordo wasn't very big after a night at the bars. It was HUGE if sober.

That was before my time, but reminds me of the "Cyclone Slam Dunk" at the [now demolished] truck stop on 30 and Dayton:
  • 12 eggs
  • 12 pieces of bacon/sausage
  • 12 Pieces of toast (24 triangles)
  • Hash browns
Impossible to complete when sober, much different story around 3am

Had el gordo a few times after being at the bars. I too would classify it as glorious.

I ate it once sober. I would then classify it as two pounds of beans and gristle wrapped in a tortilla.

Roommate plowed through 2 2 pound burritos one night

4 pounds of goodness after a night of boozing.

Original Panchero's was a staple for me. Closest thing now is if you can find a La Bamba Burrito, closest is in Madison, WI or I think Bloomington, IL. El Super Burrito in Cedar Rapids is close but they put rice on their burritos, the Gordo did not have rice.

When the space was Panchero's, that's all it was. When Panchero's moved out it became Mickey's, I believe that was in Fall of 1999 or 2000.

Even after they expanded, Panch was still pretty solid but man that place is a shell of what it used to be. They ditched their old hot sauce a couple of years back and the new smokey chipotle diaper sauce they are using is just bad. It completely takes over the burrito where the old sauce was a perfect balance of heat and extra flavor.

Minskys was never in the basement? I don't know why I thought that then.
I know they attempted going into the Old Toyota dealership on Lincoln maybe early 2000's?

Yeah the new ones are not even close to that good. That burrito was the best!

I believe Minsky's was what used to be Tazzle's. Thursday night at Tazzle's was $5 All-You-Can-Drink. Above Tazzles was The Scene. Friday nights we would go to downtown Ames to The Zone for Penny Pitchers.
