I think that you have to dig a little deeper than Glory Days, Born in the USA and Born to Run. Most of Springsteen's best stuff are songs that weren't on the singles charts and didn't see the radio. But what I like about his music is that most of the songs tell a story. Just great songwriting that you don't see with most artists.
My apologies, but still the ABB needed more love hereC'mon boys! I had 'em in the first post. They are Top 5 without a doubt here.
Excellent point....Springsteen has also written quite a few songs that were hits for other people too. Although we are talking about groups, the same can be said for Dylan. None of my personal favorites are even on his greatest hits album.I think that you have to dig a little deeper than Glory Days, Born in the USA and Born to Run. Agree with pretty much everything else in your post. DBT won't ever be mainstream, Crowes have been consistently good throughout their career, body of work goes to the Boss & Company.

I like your style. I think if Morrison hadn't cut himself down with drugs, they would have been much bigger than they were. I got into a huge Doors kick during college when I lived in a house with an old turntable in it. Went to a thrift shop and bought a whole bunch of old albums.
CCR has got to be near the top of any American Band list. What about the Jimi Hendrix experience, that count as a band?
Numbers wise (I Googled it to see who the top selling American band was), the Eagles are top...which makes me gag. How about Aerosmith? Their early stuff rocked pretty hard and IMO they are pretty influential. Van Halen or even Metallica. To say that Metallica has not influenced modern hard rock, you would be a dope. I hate their egos and their attitudes, but they are pretty solid.

Wilco is great, but too "recent" to be on this list, IMO.
I'd say Bruce and the E street band are the most overrated band in American history. Really don't care for them at all. Any band that has a saxaphone player (sorry Clarence) should be automatically bared. Saxaphone in rock music is wrong. I actually really like Bruce's solo stuff...Nebraska is an amazing album.
I'd say Wilco, Nirvana, Ramones...crap this is hard. Makes me realize how many great 'bands' came out of England.

Well isn't that the only fair way to do it? Money talks. It's hard to argue with success. Like it or not (I don't), Kid Rock is successful because he has appealed to a broad spectrum of listeners over the years from hip hop to metal to country. Does it make him a genious musician? No. If you want to be a brilliant musician go compose a symphony. If you want a lot of fans, you have to appeal to the masses. Niche bands should not be included in this list. The reason they are "niche" bands is because a lot of people DON'T enjoy their music. Someone gave me a CD of DBT's "best stuff" and I almost fell asleep on the road. Not everyone can relate to the dirty south...
"Greatest", I think, has to find a middle ground between being popular with the masses and being considered "good" by the critical community. Springsteen, Petty, The Dead, The Allmans, etc all pulled this off pretty well.
Niche bands definitely don't have the popularity, and that's why as much as I love them I wouldn't put bands like DBT or The Hold Steady on a list of "greatest" American bands, even if I think they are that good. They don't have the popularity at this point in time to be included.
But if this made you fall asleep, I'd almost be afraid of what gets you jacked up.
