Thats a nice trade for Atlanta.

I'm wishing they didn't have to give up Jeff Locke. He has pitched well this year in the minors and in the winter leagues. I think he could be great.

But, hopefully McClouth can show the current lineup what to do w/ that chunk of lumber in their hands...

You mean take a dive, writhe on the ground, and take your base?

Instead of that.

Yes, I am embarrassed for Mr. Escobar. Almost as embarrassed as I am for Greg Paulus and his acting job.

Atleast it worked for Escobar.

Wow...

I honestly cannot figure out what the Pirates are trying to accomplish in Pittsburgh. I understand that, like other small market teams, they have to build a winner by building up their farm system. The only problem is they've been trying to build that sucker for years, and at some point you've got to hold onto the talent and run with it. ESPN was saying that last year the Pirates had the best outfield in the Major Leagues - why not try to build around that instead of always trading away their young studs to get the next crop of prospects that may or may not flame out in the Minors?

As someone else commented on the ESPN site, Pittsburgh continues to be an overglorified MLB farm team.

I also do not understand the Pirates philosophy. But, as a Cubs fan, I don't mind at all. Thanks for Aramis Ramirez by the way, Buccos!

At this time last year, the Pirates had Jason Bay in left, McLouth in center and Xavier Nady in right. That's a pretty good outfield. They haven't had a winning season since 1992, which was the last year Barry Bonds was there.

Barry Bonds = Pittsburgh's curse of the Bambino

This trade came from nowhere and hit me over the head with a Louisville Slugger. My first reaction...disappointment. He is one of the few marketable players on the Pirates roster. He's not exactly an engaging personality though, very quite and laid back.

After letting the trade digest the Pirates, amazingly, got better. The guy being called up from AAA, Andrew McCutchen, is amazing. Really all he has to replace is a .250 batting average, 9 HRs, and 35 RBI. 'Cutch also plays better defense. It won't be immediate but talent wise he has more than McLouth and is 6 years younger.

Best case senario would have been to keep McLouth and move him to one of the corner OF spots when McCutchen comes up. We'll see how the prospects turn out. It should be a few years still until we really know who won. I will certainly cheer for McLouth though, he was very fun to watch in Pittsburgh.

This was a terrible deal for the Pirates... they got little back for an all-star outfielder. I know they wanted to clear the path for McCutheon which is understandable because he's a stud, but what the hell. I mean, for that small price of gorkys hernandez (still waiting for this guy to be worht edgar renteria), and two no-namers. I mean... what a trade for the braves. Good work ATL...

In a few years will the Pirates then trade McCutcheon for some other prospects? It seems like the 'Rats are always in rebuilding mode. I understand they are trying to follow the Florida Marlins small market philosophy, but they haven't been able to have anything close to success. They don't even have the excuse that Florida uses of being in a crappy stadium. It is strange, because the Pirates have had no huge shortage of talent over the years, they just haven't been able to put it together all at once. If their starting pitching is good, they don't score runs, and vice versa. If they would just hold on to a few of their better players for a few more years, they might be able to win some games. Instead it seems like they just try to sell off anyone who performs so they can "build for the future".
As a pirates fan, do you think that the manager has anything to do with their inconsistency, or is it all the frint office and the team that they have put together. Pitt always seems to have some players that are worth having, but it seems the role players aren't there to glue it together.

One thing you have to understand about the All-Star label on certain players from Pittsburgh, KC, Washington, etc. is that each team needs a player to represent them in the game. McLouth was the only option for the Buccos last season.

How do we know who got the better deal? The Braves are said to have one of the best and deepest farm systems in baseball and the Pirates just got their 4th and 7th rated prospects. Each team traded from a strength. To say the Pirates lost this trade is not looking at the big picture. The Braves made the trade to win now...the Pirates made the trade to win later.

The Pirates have a new management team in place. The old GM, Dave Littlefield, destroyed the Pirates organization. The minor league teams were full of 30-35 year old journeyman players. His biggest gaffe was selecting a relief pitcher with the #2 overall pick in 2007 over catcher Matt Weiters, who went to the Orioles. His reason behind the pick was Moskos (the pitcher) was more "Major League ready" than Weiters. Well, Weiters is in Baltimore right now, projected to be the savior of the franchise while Moskos is getting lit up in high-A ball.

The new management team is building from the bottom up and I can actually buy into that. I can acutally see a plan in place. It hurts to lose guys like McLouth, Bay, and Nady but it will be fun to watch the Pirates in 3-4 years with guys like McCutchen, Tabata, Alvarez, Maholm, and others.
