Curious if you buy simple syrup or make it. I've only had it when I make it. Very easy to make. 2 parts sugar to 1 part water. (Store bought stuff has many other ingredients) Heat it up and stir to dissolve the sugar. Keeps for a long time if stored sealed in the fridge.

I mainly use simple syrup to make maple syrup by adding mapleine to it. Super easy and way better than anything you can buy aside from pure maple syrup.

I have never bought simple syrup, and have made it once. So easy to make that I can’t fathom why one would buy it. It just never gets used here so there’s not much point in trying to keep it on hand.

I went to a bar in Minneapolis right before the whole coronavirus thing kicked into gear. I had just finished Ice Fishing with some uncles and was waiting for my flight the next afternoon.

They had these out of this ******* world Bloody Mary wings. They make their own concentrated bloody mary mix and then mix it with clamato and vodka normally for their bloody marys. Well they took this mix and tossed with with some wings and it was unreal how good it was. I've been craving them ever since.

I offered the bartender and chef $100 for the recipe and they agreed but they couldn't find the recipe book. There was a daytime chef that knows it by heart but when I went back the next day the manager overheard and he wouldn't let the transaction go down.

The manager offered me a 10oz container of the mix for free but since I was traveling, I didn't really have a great way of packing it.

After this is all over I am gonna go back and try to get a container of it to take home then try and recreate it. I hope they don't close down. Or maybe I do so then they'd sell me the recipe :D

Ok good folks of CF...I've never made a homemade Bloody Mary. So whats the best mix/vodka out there? What other ingredients do you all recommend????

I kind of ask because Fareway has a special on Zing Zang bloody mix with Butchers Block vodka...curious if that was any good as well.

And if anyone out there is really cool, how to make an Old Fashioned..?
I used to be a ZingZang guy, then I discovered Madam Mary. It’s all I use and I’m not too particular with the vodka I use, typically Smirnoff.

Zing Zang and Mr/Mrs T’s are always solid and widely available mixes. ZZ was my go-to mix when I first started making Bloodys, and I kind of burned out on it, but it’s still a quality option.

Hair of the Dawg and Madame Mary are really good local mixes

A traditional old fashioned can take a bit of time. If I'm feeling lazy, in a shaker I do a few (3-4) ounces of a nice whiskey, a TBSP of orange marmalade, some orange bitters and shake well and served up for my likening. It has the hint of orange and sweetness that a properly muddled sugar cube/orange gives. Cheers!

If anyone is looking for a premixed Old Fashioned, I would recommend - Tattersall Old Fashioned. It is made by Tattersall DIstilling, Minneapolis, MN. 70 proof, so not diluted like some premixes or liquors. Might be a little pricey, depending on what Rye Whiskey you might use to mix your own. Just pour over ice. Good stuff.

The Cellar Peanut Pub in Newton makes great bloodys.

Recently discovered The Real Dill bloody mix and it’s fantastic. Someone gifted it to us so I don’t know if it’s available locally but you can order online.

If you are every in Pella or Newton grab some of The Cellar Peanut Pub's bloody's. They are AMAZING! I know they are selling them in 16 oz cans to go right now. Seriously the best bloody mary I've ever had in my life.

I was a bit confused by the OP which refers to "homemade" and buying a mix at Fareway. Those seem like two different things. Yours is truly homemade! The other is store-bought rather than ordered at a bar. Perhaps the personal accessorizing makes it homemade, but I wouldn't refer to it as homemade unless you bought all these ingredients at Fareway.

When the the Restaurants completley open up Aunt Maudes has the best Bloody Mary's. Been sampling them for many, many years. A while back they sold me some of the mix for a party I was having that evening. Zing Zang is good too.

Definitely prefer Zing Zang over Mr/Mrs T. As far as vodka, most will tell you it doesn’t matter, that, unlike bourbon, scotch, etc., vodka is made one way. Not being a connoisseur, I just buy a middle of the road brand. As one poster mentioned, dill pickle juice is a must for me. Also like a wedge of Clausen dill pickle in mine.

I started using pickle juice as a way to extend a bottle of mix, but it lightens the drink and adds great flavor

When I was in school, I had A LOT of Welch Ave bloody Mary's. They definitely have a great homemade mix.

Has anyone had a bullshot? It’s a Bloody Mary but it swaps the tomato juice for beef broth.

I have always wanted to try it at a restaurant or bar before I make it myself. Haven’t found it anywhere

A couple Summers ago we went to Sobelman's up in Milwaukee before going to a Brewers game. Ordered one of their jumbo Bloody Marys which inspired this monstrosity from about a year ago. I like to use CDC Dill Pickle Bloody Mary Mix. HyVee used to have it but we haven't found it in quite awhile. We've been using Morning Wood Mix since it has the pickle flavoring, which is alright.

Side note, when I ordered that Bloody Mary in Milwaukee the waiter was almost appalled I ordered it just for myself. It was like he was trying to talk me out of it by telling me it was designed for four people. I said so were pitchers of beer and I still drink those by myself. I did not drive that night.
