Jim Zabel is the Iowa equivalent to Beano Cook. The last relevant thing he had to say was some time before the Carter administration. (That's the late '70's for you Hawk fans)

I LOVE IT! I LOVE IT! I LOVE IT! (Oops, I crapped my pants)

Well if the "Big Game" is on the Big 10 Network, then it's a good bet that Buffalo Wild Wings will have the best commercials. Then again, they'll be the only commercials.

Mr. Zabel: Koufax is a good egg, he was nice to that kid. But he fights like a girl. You like that? I'm right here Miss, what are you gonna do about it? Hahaha.
Sonny: What are you drunk Mr. Zabel?
Mr. Zabel: Well, I-I had a few chardonnays, what of it?
Sonny: Get off the stand please.
Mr. Zabel: You got it. Got a few problems

When you put "Big Z", I thought you were referring to Carlos Zambrano. If I knew it was a post about Jim Zabel, I wouldn't have waisted my time opening the thread.

Somebody might want to change the title to Senile Z still stuck in the 80's.

If a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it, does it make sound?

If a pickled hawk announcer starts running at the mouth, does anyone care?

I'm pretty sure your rumor source either got it backwards or is making things up. Zabel is as big of a homer as there is anywhere, but he's not an excuse maker and he will flat out say when Iowa sucks like he did last year. It's the other guy on Soundoff (Jon, not Jim) who continually spews the nonsense about Iowa not trying, not showing up, ISU's superbowl, etc.

Zabel hasn't laid the blame for anything at iowa's feet since the 40's.

I've said it before. You could watch an iowa game on tv, and turn on the radio listening to Zabel. And you'd swear you were experiencing two different games.

He's a hawk homer, which is understandably why iowa fans love him. He also a terrible announcer.

That wasn't his point, it was that, as earlier noted, it was a caller who had made the comments attributed to Zabel.

And I have to point of that if Zabel has blamed Iowa for anything since the forties, it's for not passing him another beer. Getting well pickled in the slow slide to senility are not a good combination.

Woohoo for Super Bowl week! The hawks can use it as an excuse all they want, but in Ames IA, winning Super Bowls is a way of life! If kf can't figure out how to get a team motivated to play its biggest rival for $3 mil per, tough. They can soothe themselves with words and excuses. We can soothe ourselves by polishing our Super Bowl trophy!

I call it Zabel babble. It has only intensified since I watched him in the late 60's and early 70's on the coaches show. Back then he had a show that predicted the scores of the upcoming games but he didn't have to pick a winner for the "Super Bowl of Iowa"because we didn't play Iowa in football. He usually picked the state schools but his demeanor was slightly biased toward Iowa. He really liked Maury John when Maury was at Drake but when Zabel had a real rough time when Maury took over at ISU. Maury would zing him every now and then just to provoke him.

By the way, that coaches show was sponsored by Hamm's beer. Perhaps too many perks from the sponsor led to his current condition.

In all honesty, I am not sure even Z knows what he is saying anymore. The guy is essentially pickled and will probably live forever.

Not true. I heard him on the air during the meltdown after last year's WMU loss and among other things he said that he did not think Iowa could win much with Jake as the quarterback and that the coaches were going to have to go back to the drawing board and make some tough decisions.

I think Dolphin has become just as bad as Zabel ever was. This weekend he was babbling on about how pro scouts are there eating up the way the Hawk's were running around the field. When I listen to him I understand why Hawk fans think their team should contend for the national title every year.
