I actually like Pizza Pit. My freshman year my roommate and I ordered it every Sunday night. I still crave it at times. The last time I ordered was 2 years ago when my hubby and two older girls were out of town. Yum.

I still have scars on the rough of my mouth from burning the **** out of it on Pizza Pit pizza 20 years ago. All the cheese would always pull off on the first bite and the sauce would be lava hot.

In a side note, why would you let your husband leave town with two older girls? I guess variety is the spice of life.

Not a surprise that people go overboard when describing something they don't like. Great Plains isn't the greatest pizza in the world, but it's certainly not terrible. For my money I enjoy Happy Joe's for chain pizza and George and Nick's for a local spot.

George and Nicks is solid. Best overall pizza though hands down is The Hitchin Post in Bevington. It's a little methy, but the pizza is amazing.

This thread definitely needs categories. Not all pizza is created equal, maybe the question should be pound for pound or bang for your buck champion. Or else there is too many categories of pizza. Deep Dish, by the slice, breakfast, specialty, etc, etc.

For breakfast pizza, it is Casey's and/or Pasquale's frozen breakfast pizza, and then everything else.

The pizza from Something Italian is also very good. Never had their breakfast pizza, but I can't see how it would be bad.

I agree, you really need categories in a thread like this. Best deep dish, beat thin crust, best breakfast, beat frozen, etc.

Something Italian breakfast pizza is great! You can get it at the Farmer's Market on 4th St.

No one has mentioned The Tavern. One of my favorites in town, but a little pricey.

Mabe's in Decorah is great. When I go to Decorah, there is no question that Mabe's is where we are eating. No other pizza joint in Iowa does that for me.

I was a big fan of pepperoni and cream cheese at DaVinci's in Ames back in the day. A friend ordered it in front of me, and i couldn't believe what I heard. He convinced me to try it, and it was all I would order there afterwards. Now, it's the only kind of homemade pizza the wife makes for me. Awesome.

I will also pick Zipps in Adair. Kinda pricey but totally worth it. If you call ahead he will have it ready if you are headed on 80. The OP is pretty good too. Love their buffalo chicken pizza.

It's been years since I've driven by the smiley face water tower.

Are you talking about The Other Place in Cedar Falls? They are major contributors to the "reduce the amount of dough and call it thin-crust" phenomenon I described earlier. Thin-crust pizza should be cut in squares and look like this...

...not this...

That last picture is not thin-crust pizza. It's a floppy layer of soggy dough being crushed by far too much cheese and greasy meat.

Not possible t get too much cheese and meat is it?

I will probably get bashed for this, but I've had some very good pizzas from the Hut. Love the thick crust and the thin crust, but the hand tossed is just too chewy and tough for my liking.

They dropped them long ago, but I used to love their Barbeque pizza.

I really depends on the location and operation. It seems like the eat-in ones are better than the to-go only places.

And the pizza on the lunch buffet just sucks in my opinion. Dry, flavorless, and no ingredients.

Pizza Hut is my favorite of the "chains." I normally get a cheeseburger pizza for me, and a thin crust cheese for the kids. Breadsticks and cheese sticks are both awesome. The pizza rollers are really good too. I like to dip the thin rust in marinara.

If any of you ever get down to Albuquerque, you must try Venezia's. NY style. It is awesome!

Agree on Pizza Pit, never understood how anyone would pick it over other places. They don't even have any great deals or anything. I suppose location and then people get nostalgic over it looking back. If you look up "completely average pizza" in the dictionary there would be a picture of Pizza Pit.

If you want to go there, fine. But in reality he took a three generation trip (his dad, him, our two older girls) and went to St. Louis for a Cardinals game--he and his dad are both life-long fans and our daughters are starting off that way. I hope they can make the trip again this fall. So I can order more bad pizza and eat it all myself.
