30 posts in and no one has mentioned Zoey's in Marion?

This. Wig and Pen is damn good, but Zoey's deep dish is the best I've had in Iowa (had better in Chicago, but that's not a fair comparison).

Is it just me or do we have a "best pizza" thread every couple months? Obviously my vote is for Happy Joes but the exact pizza would have to be my own inventention, the WGP (world's greatest pizza). I would make it for lunch buffets and announce it over the loud speaker as we brought it out. Deep dish Italian sausage, with extra sauce, extra cheese, crushed red pepper and a bunch of hand sliced peperoncinis.

Zoey would be in my top 5 but picking the best pizza in Iowa is dumb because there are so many types. It's like asking what the best beer is. Just as an example, I really like godfather's taco, about anything from Fongs, Chucks, etc. but all are so different.

Wig and Pens flying tomato is pretty damn good. Mabe's in Decorah. Vesuvius in Ames is also very good. Not sure which is the best.

IMO a great pizza has to have some kind of meat in it - the type of meat might be up for debate and I will admit I haven't had the flying tomato but I can't imagine the best pizza in IOWA is a vegetarian pizza.

I also agree that Great Plains is vastly overrated. I like dipping the crust in honey, but that's it. The pizza itself is just not that great. Frankly I'd rather eat Dominos

Flying Tomato is just the style of pizza. We usually get it with sausage.

Old Chicago is good but calling it the best is like calling Famous Daves the best BBQ in KC

Not a surprise that people go overboard when describing something they don't like. Great Plains isn't the greatest pizza in the world, but it's certainly not terrible. For my money I enjoy Happy Joe's for chain pizza and George and Nick's for a local spot.

I could make a pizza at my house way better than any pizza made at Happy Joe's by simply putting a Tombstone frozen pizza in the oven. That place is pure ****. ****!

Haven't read the whole thread, but has anyone had Jerry's Pizza in Sioux City? Probably my favorite.

Agreed, there are a lot of excellent options in Iowa which makes it difficult. By that same measure, picking Illinois's best has to be essentially impossible. Pizano's is good but I would never go with it over one of the deep dish places. So many good choices in Illinois

Ok - The picture they showed had slices of tomato on cheese and couldn't see any meat. Any kind of meat would be better.

The toppings actually go under the cheese. Also, im not necessarily saying its the best. It's pretty good.

I'll have to try Zoey's if I'm ever in Marion.

Marion, IA
1. Tomasos- Detroit Crust in Cedar Rapids (nothing comes close)
2. Wig and Pen- Flying Tomato Crust in IC

Most Overrated
1. Great Plains
2. Zoeys in Marion (although I still really like it. Tomasos is way better)

Mabes in Decorah is by far the best pizza in Iowa. I wish they would franchise. They only have 2 locations.
