EXACTLY!

Chicken spedini, with the angel air, amogio.... That is the BEST!

I was really excited the first time I saw it on the menu - Hy-Vee has a chicken spedini that you can get and grill, and I had really enjoyed it. It was about 1000x better at Latin King.

Baratta's 2320 S. Union
Bordenaro's 6108 SW 9th
Mezzodi's on Fluer

to start

edit, how could I forget Tumea and Sons!

The above are the cream of the crop Italian eateries on the South side Latin King is on the East side of DM

Latin King really isn't super-expensive, in relation to a lot of the places mentioned. I really liked it - I got the chicken spiedini (sp?) with alfredo last time, and it was awesome. Try their creamy Italian salad dressing if you go.

Food is more traditional at Latin King. LK is one of my favorites as I eat there about once a week. I agree with Angie that the Chicken Spiedini is terrific. I usually get it with the garlic oil base. Anything with their red sauce is great and their house garlic parm dressing is out of the world. Try to get in the big room/new addition...fun atmosphere or older part for a quieter dinner. Steaks are great too.

Cosi Cucina is american italian/contemporary italian. Cosi Cucinia was one of our favorites when we lived in Beaverdale...a little quieter atmosphere probably over LK.

Can't go wrong with either...

Thanks - it's garlic parm, not creamy Italian!! Good memory!! :notworthy:

I do love Cosi Cucina, too. I'm not usually a big calimari fan, but they have the little tiny O's instead of the big creepy legs (if anyone can discern what I mean there), so it's really good. I love their alfredo.

if you want the south side experience go to Barattas. I grew up about three blocks away and they always have good food.Another old south side goodie is Riccellis on Indianola Road.

Barattas or Latin King

The chains do well because people like the "big modern restaurant with tolerable Costco catering" atmosphere. I like the "hole in the wall with outstanding, made-from-scratch food".

On the "must experience it once, just because" scale, Gino's is interesting as well. The lounge is straight out of 1967. It has to be seen to be appreciated. They have pretty good dressings and food too. I'd eat there before Biaggis or Olive Garden, that's for sure.

I give a big thumbs up to Riccelli's on Indianola Road, Noahs Ark on Ingersoll and if you can find it Baratta's is good as well. If you are looking for atmosphere I would rank them Baratta's then Noah's Ark and finally Riccelli's. I eat at Riccelli's quite a bit but I have a 3 year old so I'm not looking for atmosphere, just good food.

Tumea and Son's has the better food, Barattas has better atmosphere...both are comparable in price. If you are a steak guy(what am I saying all guys are "steak guys") you have to try the Steak Deburgo! It is by far their signature meal. Say hi to Jo-Jo for me.

I like the following for italian:

Marinos
J. Benjamin's

They're both on Franklin. Marinos is in a strip mall but they have great food imo. Bring your own wine also.

Also forgot Mezzodi's and Jonnies Italian Steakhouse by the airport...took wife to Jonnies and they have privacy booths with curtains that surround you, good for intimate dinner, kinda pricy though.
