Another Female Teacher 'Incident'

I feel like these situations are always in a vacuum. Doesn't seem to be any kind of consistent punishment handed out if any at all with many of these.

I don't really have anything to say as far as a moral standpoint but I guess it seems strange to me that outside of the minor being her student would the relationship be legal if the ages were the same but she were not his superior?

Edit: we have a family friend who had an affair with their student athlete. They continued the relationship post high school as some of my friends lived in the same dorm as the student and saw the teacher leaving the room on more than one occasion late at night.

Their spouses is a lawyer though so I'm not sure if or what went on behind the scenes. The students parent was an administrator...

Not in the state of Iowa, with the age of consent at 16, the older person has to be within 2 or 3 years difference of the 16 year old for it to be legal. So it would be illegal for a 17 year old still in school to be dating a 30 year old. But once they turn 18 that legal obligation disappears. Unless they are considered to be a teacher or someone would be considered a position of authority over the younger person.

We had a case ten years ago about a former student, that came back as a teacher here in town. Everyone thought he was a good kid, his mom had taught for years in the district, so everyone was glad he had returned. In high school this kid was in my daughters class, and took her to their Jr., Prom, we knew his family very well.

After getting the job, we later found out he started sleeping with one of the athletes in the senior class, her parents allowed him to sign her out after track meets and bring her home. I know for a fact the coach did not like it, but the administration said there was nothing they could do.
After a few years, the guy leaves the district, and his teaching with the girls father 20 miles away, in fact they have rooms side by side both math instructors. The girl and her father get into it over her sleeping with people older than her, and she spelled the beans about her and her high school teacher. Dad sues the district here in town, which goes no where, the district that employed the kid placed him on leave. Cops are called in and before you now it, the teacher is convicted and sent to 10 years in jail, along with another local coach that had also been sleeping with the girl in high school. The coach appealed his sentence and the supreme court of Iowa agreed that the way the law read, it stated teachers and he was just a coach. All charges against him were dropped, but the legislature did change the law the next year to include all school employees.

Isn't the age of consent 16? I suppose if the parents want to press charges they could but I don't know that you can really hold her over the fire other than she is breaking her duties and responsibilities as a teacher.

I believe it's 16, but the age difference must be within 2 years.

Teachers sleeping with students is the dirty little secret that has been around forever in most schools. The difference today unlike 20 to 30 years ago the teacher is brought up on charges. Before when it happened the teacher was quietly told to resign and leave the district, many felt it was better for the student and the district to not let the public know that they had a pervert teaching their children.

As an educator, I find it intolerable and have reported one myself to a principle when told by a girl I was coaching that her sister was sleeping with the varsity girls coach. Instead of being thanked, I was told to never bring it up again, or I would no longer be teaching at the school, the AD who I had first talked too about the situation said, "he knows, but the coach is being protected by the administration, and there is nothing he can do about it. "

Its out there, and its still going on, and it makes me sick to my stomach.

More like 10 years younger...pretty sure he was a West Fork grad too. Not sure if she was teaching there when he was a student though. Some serious soap opera action going on in North Central Iowa...

I leave both to the English department, the rule in my class is "get the spelling close and it counts."

The second person was not a teacher, he just coached in the district, that fact alone saved him from prison. I would guess they both knew, same age, hung out together.

The girl, I only heard about the teacher and the coach, maybe she was doing more, doing less, it really does not matter. I am not here to judge a student, but the adults should have known better, and should be in jail for what they did.

I agree. And because one was "just" a coach shouldn't be a minor technicality. If he actually did know what was going on with his "licensed" buddy....then the consequences should apply across the board. Unless the state has no jurisdiction on those without a license. Then I guess it would be up to the family and I know if it was me......even if my daughter was considered the local tramp

Have you never thought with the wrong head? Especially when 20something. Not condoning it, and I would not , and didn’t back then, do that. In some of the college classes I taught (night ones so I could have 19-60 year olds)I definitely had some female students try to work me, but stayed away.

It still doesn't excuse knowing one simple rule and breaking it. Especially if you are a guy because the odds are you are going to prison and labeled a sex offender.

Agree. Just why I don’t think you should hire coaches from a hometown right out of college. Too much of a still in HS feel. Not condoning it, just sometimes it makes sense to not have high risk variables enter into the mix
