I just want to leave my final thoughts on the matter, and then I'm going to bed.

1) I never said drunk driving was a good thing. I just don't think it's as dangerous as meth, and thus deserves less attention from law enforcement.

2) Same for underage drinking.

3) Our opinions are all products of our life experiences. I have seen people's lives absolutely shattered by meth. Not just theirs, but all the people around them. I've seen it almost kill entire towns (not every person in a town, but more like a town to just collapse from the meth problem). I know drunk driving can do some of these things, but I just haven't witnessed it cause the same scale of destruction I've witnessed meth cause. Thats all. Good night.

Well,

1) Not even close to agreeing, but meth is without a question a major issue. Particularly in some areas as you correctly point out.

2) Don't agree either.

3) They certainly.

Good night to all.

More than you think. Just google "mobile meth lab" and look at all the new stories. Its not that big of problem in Iowa yet, but it is a big problem in residential areas. People can drive out to the middle of nowhere to cook, and then drive back into the suburbs.

Ok - the .0x was an intended exaggeration.

Point being, on the whole the percentages just aren't comparable.

And yes, there's the little commuting thing going on - but typically even so, they go, cook and leave the materials out there.

I'm not sure why we're arguing at this point about how they cook freaking meth. Nobody is denying it gets cooked a gazillion different ways, places, methods, and procedures.

But comparison to DUI isn't really much of a comparision. Sure, in certain counties perhaps. But statewide and nationwide - the numbers just aren't there. Doesn't make it a non-issue. I just can't believe DUI is less of one or get behind the concept that law enforcement doesn't pay enough attention to it.

IMO-If the officers are pulling people over for tinted windows and lack of a front plate than they need some staff reductions. Jaywalking is also illegal but I don't see DM police handing out tickets for it. 56 in a 55 zone is also illegal but I don't see people being pulled over for this infraction.

Just like any job, there are good and bad ones. You know that SOME of these cops have "short man syndrome" and the only reason they got into the field is so that they can feel like a man by pulling people over and harassing them. On the other hand I've dealt with a lot of good ones.

BTW-I heard that Iowa is actually considering losing the front plate law like the other 20 states that don't require it.

Yesterday, A vehicle was pulled over for speeding. The vehicle travelled a little ways and was in a school zone PICKING UP HIS 5 year old. After handing the officer his license he told the officer he had to watch for his kid. The officer was in the patrol car I am sure doing a wants and warrants while the gentleman waited outside for his kid to show up. When his son approached he put him in the car along with his daughter and sea tbelted him in. It was at this time he noticed the officer out of his car "TRIANGULATING" him with his hand on his revolver!!! When asked why he was acting like that and putting him is a very uncomfortable position the officer replied quote "I thought you were going to run!!!"

He told the officer... " You have my license, I live 1 mile away, you have my plate number, a description of my car, I have my two children in my car with me." Where the hell am I going to go? Then you put your hand on your weapon for what reason..... are you willing to SHOOT someone for SPEEDING? Is it worth someones life to be killed in front of his children for speeding when you already have all the info you need for a proper arrest if necessary?
Attempting to pull a handgun or be ready to at a elementary school in ANKENY is unacceptable to me. Talk about putting all of us in danger, and poor decision making.

I'm confused by this. Does this mean that Ankeny Police shoot people that run, or run after people with their weapon in their hand?

Are you sure it went down like this? This action doesn't seem warranted if the circumstances are truly as you descirbe them.

I didn't realize Ankeny was this rough. I'm surprised SWAT wasn't brought in to deal with this madness. :jimlad:

I figure this will get some play but why are the Ankeny Police so BADGE HEAVY! First off, this does NOT pertain to me but Someone close to me whom I trust. The Ankeny Police seen more content to hone their skills on two areas rather then protect the Community. The two areas are "Window Tinting" and License plates (front). Tell me, Where is the "COMPELLING" state interest in these matters? It certainly can't be a safety issue. Oh, I got it, Its a easy mark, easy money, and they don't put themselves in peril going after these areas like following up a robbery, chasing druggies or domestic disputes. When seconds count COPS are only minutes away...... giving someone a BS ticket because his windows are too dark or he has no front license plate. The ONLY legal plate on your car is the one with the sticker on it. Try switching them around and you'll receive a ticket for that. As long as one can prove ownership and has a rear plate properly stickered that should suffice. Window tinting? Who cares. Do any of you really care if the guy next to you has dark windows? Truth is, many COP cars have the same tinting, some as dark but I am sure they are not receiving tickets. How about sun-glasses. IF the police contend that they wanna see your eyes..... then I want to see theirs.

I am sure you will hear more about this incident as the person involved feels the Officer in question acted irresponsibly and chose a poor decision making process which is first and foremost the most important attribute in LAW enforcement.

Ankeny should be ashamed of this officers conduct and it should NOT be condoned. BTW, He has been a Officer since 2007. Talk about a Rambo. Real tough cop, Strapping leather against a father and his two kids........ Absolutely shameful!!!!!

[Something very much like this happened to me in Ankeny. One can't go 1 mile without seeing 2-3 cops. It is over policed and pressures to traveling public. Why did the city give a new budget to put 2-3 more on the road for 2009/2010? Waste of tax payers money. Do we need any more ticket writers on Delaware Ave? My kids are scared of these officers. like 89]

The reason for the increase is because the city has decided they want x number of officers per 1000 population, and the city has been growing quickly over the past decade. In order to maintain that percentage, they have to hire additional officers. Personally, I would whether the city spend money on better police/fire protection than to have them spend it on stupidity.

I have factory tinted windows... explain that one to the judge.

In the front?

Not on the front you don't. Front being driver and passenger and windshield further down than 3-6 inches (i forget the exact limit).

I was reading through this and this caught my eye, particularly since I just picked up a loaner car today. Like nearly all cars here in Texas, all four windows, and rear window are tinted due to the heat we get down here in the summer. My current cars do not have tinted windows.

Does this mean that should I purchase a new car down here, I can't drive up to my house in Wisconsin without risking getting pulled over? Texas state law mandates that all four windows must allow 25% of light in (might be raised to 30 or 35 percent shortly). In Iowa, the front windows must allow 70% of light in.

No, but he better be prepared to shoot some moron who leans inside his car, partially out of view during a traffic stop.

Especially the kind of creep who would speed in a school zone and then take the "victim stance" for being pulled over.

BTW, why is that young people who think smoking dope, underage drinking and having equipment violations like tinted windows are okay are always the ones being harassed? And these little whiners always seem to point to some "greater crime" to justify that their own criminal activities aren't so bad?

Could it be that a major source of crime in Iowa is caused by these lovely young babies of ours? Not all, but the profile fits: The same punk with tint, loud stereo, dope paraphanelia, etc. is rather likely to be into other things.

Frankly, as a grown up adult type, I want that kind of thing slammed, and hard, before it grows up to bigger problems. After all, us grown ups pay the officers' salaries, by and large.

And your ZR 6000 Corvette doesn't fit a front license. My heart just bleeds for you and the tragedy involved with that. I say we not issue tickets, but allow, on first offense, the county to furnish a marginally trained handyman with the most ugly and offensive looking oversized bracket known to mankind.

Just a question. Was this post supposed to make sense?

And dude, you DON'T lean into your car during a stop. You don't get out of your car, and you don't disobey or ignore the officer to pick up your kids.

If your kids are scared of these officers, I'm guessing you have a reason to be scared of the police, and are reinforcing your views on them.

My kids don't have a fear of the police. None of the law-abiding people I know's kids are afraid of the police.

You know, I used to drive 9+ hours a day for a living, and I've actually been witnessed 4 real abuses of police power in the enforcement of the law. But I responded to each one calmly and correctly and in 3 out of the 4 it was resolved to my satisfaction and the 4th just wasn't that important.

Despite those cases of misconduct, I still support and respect the police. They are, like us, human and capable of all sorts of wrong. And the system, believe it or not, is set up to correct for this, provided you work it correctly.

BTW - I just won an audit on my Iowa taxes, representing myself via the internet. I'm flying a little high right now on that.

Correct. It still doesn't explain the "quote" (see what I did there) by the police officer. The story doesn't make sense.

It's illegal to tint your windows.
It's illegal to not have your license plate on.
I grew up in Ankeny, and still work there, and have never once been pulled over by an Ankeny cop.
But I don't have my windows tinted.
And I put my license plates on the way the law says you have to.

So simple.

Right. It's possible that the person telling the story is being less than honest, or... it's also possible that the officer, who is now amped up by a non-compliant traffic stop, blurted out something that didn't make complete sense

Either way, dude with the kids telling the story, needs to be dogpiled on for being a tool.

Not the cop.

Right?!?
