Hey everyone! After this semester, I'll be staying in Ames through the summer. I've looked online a little for job openings, but I'm still looking. I'm posting this to see if anyone on here knows about or has heard about any good jobs in the summer. I'd prefer to avoid the food/restaurant jobs. Thanks

I got a lot of satisfaction working grounds crew for ISU when I was there for the summer a few years ago. You get to spend all day outside, see every part of ISU's grounds (my favorite part), and you get the day off when it rains for the most part.

I miss summers in Ames...

There's a lot of ag research done during the summer, and they are often looking for field hands. Hard work, long hours, but they pay pretty good.

What's your major? Depending on what you're studying, you might be able to find a summer research job or some sort of summer work in your department/college.

Worked a few summers for Rec Services on campus, first was mainly supervising the Lied weight room (this was before the State Gym expansion). 40 hours, super easy, good people, better parties.

Ames in the summer without any serious responsibility was the best.

I worked ISU dining once.....terrible idea.

Then worked for the construction management office as an intern. Loved it and was able to work between classes during the year and full-time in the summer. If you can find something on campus even in your field, it'll pay off later.

Otherwise, I'm sure restaurants will need help as a lot of their staff is probably students who will be gone for the summer. I'd start talking/applying now. Don't wait til its too late.

Summers in Ames were the best. Lot's of great memories and it's so weird how the dynamic of everything changes. Parties, the bar scene, most your friends are gone so you find a random group of summer friends, campus and classes.

I worked the same job I had during the school year, so don't know too much about summer only positions.

I'd recommend trying to get a few summer classes in, primarily classes you don't want to take during the school. Do it on the cheap with online classes or through DMAAC. One summer I took speech online through some CC in eastern Iowa.

Son also worked at Rec Services. Mostly lifeguarding. Had a blast.

Definitely look at the student jobs board on Cy-Hire, although I think for some reason the Rec Services job wasn't on there and he just went to their website.

One of his friends worked for a local yard service, which he liked because he loved being outdoors.

I wouldn't trade my wife and kids for anything, but that doesn't mean I can't be jealous as hell.

There are plenty of good suggestions in this thread. You'll find something. Good luck, but most of all, enjoy every minute of it.

I never went home for any summers in college at ISU. Absolutely loved how the city changes. better traffic, easier to get groceries, by the time it was Thursday it felt like the weekend was starting.
Lots of Cubs day games, Peterson Pits, Mickey's patio, house parties. Loved it!

As a year round resident, I love the accessibility of movies, bars, and restaurants in the summer too. :D

Yes yes yes and yes! Always an adventure to go to the Keg Shop to see what was on fire sale. Lots of fire sale beer and sunflower seeds consumed watching the Cubs.

Man I forget how great the pit was too before they outlawed booze. You could obviously still bring it, but crowds/fun died down. Once that happened we started floating the skunk a little more, that was always a good time.

We always floated the Squaw. It was fun going through Veenker and chatting with the golfers.

I worked for the ITS Department located in the Communications building. I worked there year-round as a student and spent my time going between all the lecture halls and classrooms to check that the AV equipment was functional. I'd bring a few movies along, play them in a room for 10 minutes while checking that everything was working, pack up and move to the next room. When I wasn't doing that I was editing videos, checking their rental equipment they have available for students/faculty and assisting with some AV installs. Not sure if this job still exists or not but it was super easy, super flexible and the pay wasn't bad either.

Interesting. I've never heard of people doing that stretch. Where did you get on and off? I didn't think it'd be deep enough based off going through that park on the bike trails.

We either got in at Moore Park or we would get in off of Cameron School Road. It was usually deep enough. We'd always float a cooler with us as well.
