A quick story about how lucky we are with Campbell

I don't want to make a big promo here because it isn't what he would want, however I get annoyed with media often as I feel like we are quick to condemn but don't celebrate the people we cover enough.

Matt Campbell is a phenomenal human being.

You guys know about my friend/neighbor Ava, who passed away at the age of 11 the week of the Akron game. You all have done so much for her family over the years. It's been amazing to watch.

Coach Campbell caught wind of the situation when Ava died. He told me that he wanted to take the family to a game, so that's what we did on Saturday. Phenomenal seats. A great tailgate. Everybody had a blast.

Today, before I interviewed him, Coach handed me the game ball from Saturday that he had written an inspiring message to the Hutchison's on. Incredible. I just gave the ball to Kris and it was a pretty cool thing to watch.

Again, I'm not going to push this all over the place because that isn't why Matt did it. I just think it's important to point out when we have really good people at Iowa State. We definitely have that in Matt Campbell.

From what we know of our coach, he'd likely respond he's lucky to have ISU.

I understand that maybe -- MAYBE -- at some point Campbell may leave Iowa State. But...

Campbell is not a dumb person. He is smart and savvy. He was doing very well at Toledo, and he had to know bigger schools would come knocking and he would have his pick if he continued to do well. I don't think he's the type of person who would jump at the first job offer that came his way.

So in that regard, I think he chose Iowa State just as much Iowa State chose him. I remember when he was introduced as Cyclone head coach and he told the story about how, after playing and losing here in 2014, he called his wife and told her how impressed he was with Ames, the ISU facilities and the ISU fans. If I remember right, he said he told her, "I could see myself coaching here some day."

So, maybe Campbell leaves someday. But maybe, just maybe, he is where he wants to be. This moving story is an example of that. Thanks for sharing, Chris.

Very nice. I think most people have good hearts but it's important coaches provide an example.

Good coaches win games. Great coaches inspire.

I met him at Cy's House of Trivia 2 years ago and he acted like I was the only person in the building when we chatted for a brief minute. Appreciated that and a good reminder how to treat someone when they're talking to you.

That is truly amazing. It is stories like this that makes everything else going on around us stop.
