I would rather hire an assistant coach that is a great recruiter than someone with great player relations. We need to get some players in here to turn this thing around.

What do you think recruiting entails? If I were to guess the most important aspect in recruiting, I'd say player relationships and how comfortable athletes feel with the coaches.

I know nothing of Nurse's coaching pedigree but this type of hire concerns me.

He is a state of Iowa guy and a UNI guy just like McDermott.

It would seem to me that we need to bring in some fresh outside perspectives...not someone with a similar background.

Just my opinion.

To what end? Where is the logic in this? Why does giving a man 1 year more than he's earned equal 2 years?

IMO we will have to have a season even worse than the last to see JP make any moves. The buyout next year will still be huge ($2M).
However aggravated it makes you, I think Greg has 2 more years minimum to make this work.

Not surprised you question this...

Getting Nurse would be one of the few positives I've heard regarding MBB in awhile. He's been a lot of places in this world and coached kids with a lot of different backgrounds. And it is a good thing he's from Iowa. I'll choose the Iowa guy over out-of-state guy with same credentials 10 times out of 10.

How about someone who knows the syracuse/New York area?

Nick Nurse is a great hire. He has head coaching experience, NBA connections, and is a player's coach. This guy could practically be the Ben Jacobson of this staff. You guys who just dismiss him because he is from Iowa need to put down the hate Mac kool-aid, and sober up.

I think people are curious as to why someone would take the job when the security is just not there.

odds are this regime will not last much longer....

I guess stranger things have happened.

maybe Nurse just wants to get away from Marty.

I can't believe he would take a assistant college job and not try and get a assistant NBA job. It seems like a big demotion. What would his motivation be? I like the fact that we could get him but it just seems weird. I wonder how much he made with the Energy.

a.) I'm sure it is an increase in his salary (I wouldn't be surprised if GMac took a paycut to make it possible to get Nurse)

b.) The guy is from Iowa so maybe he wants to stay in Iowa at this point in his life

c.) He knows GMac very well as a friend and would be comfortable working side by side with him

Not to mention, he has been coaching the Energy for a while now. Maybe the asst. NBA gig isn't going to happen.

Get off the bring Wayne Morgan back idea. If he is such a good coach why has he not been picked up by someone else yet? His track record is much the same whereever he has coached. At Long Beach State he had 1 good year (24-6 and lost in first round of NIT) and only 2 winning seasons out of 9, his record at ISU went down hill every year he was here, and got us in trouble with the scheduling issue. He is a good recruiter, but since he was fired he was not picked up anywhere else, there is probably a good reason for this.

I think the fact that he is a state of Iowa guy is a good thing.

Yeah...that sure worked out well when we hired GM, didn't it?

What the hell difference does being from the state of Iowa make?

I'd ask yourself from 3 posts earlier what difference it makes... you seem to be at a disagreement with yourself.

Nurse is also a male with prior coaching experience... just like McDermott! They both are clean shaven. They also both have 10 fingers. A little more research shows that they both live in a house too! A friend of a friend also told me that both coaches wear deodorant.

We need a 9 fingered homeless bearded female who refuses to wear deodorant and has no experience coaching whatsoever to be our assistant to make sure this person is as much unlike McDermott as possible!:jimlad:

There's going to be some things in common between whoever we get and Greg... and people are going to single out those things no matter what. Just because two people have something in common... doesn't mean we're going to get the exact same results from them.

My opinion is I guess I really don't have much of one at this point. Since McDermott's going to be here next season, I guess why the hell not? I mean, it's not as if things can get much worse next season, and McDermott's practically in lame duck status anyway. I guess it can't hurt to see if some spark results from this, and if not, well, what were we really expecting out of this upcoming season anyway...
