At the time I remember thinking those oranges were going to be a curse and cringing.
Did the oranges stop once the orange bowl tie in ended or was it before that. I didnt make many FB games after graduation moved out of state and life got in the way.

My freshman year. Oranges thrown on the field as we were all certain we were going to the Orange Bowl. Crutchfield was running over people early in the year
I don't think there was a lot of people certain they were going to the Orange Bowl. There was a lot of optimism and hope though. Besides oranges were more fun to throw than tortillas.

We threw oranges, half because we thought it was funny and half because we wanted to attend an Orange bowl!

The oranges stopped before the orange bowl tie-in ended. But only because it was obvious - based on the on-field performance - that it was a completely useless waste of a perfectly good orange when we sucked each and every season from the get-go.

The tough guy could throw kids around for not being able to go to WW II.

Right. Probably should just go ahead and win the next 6 so we can take care of the best start record and the 10 win season one at the same time.
Agree. And we will have to be very quiet from here on!

this game worries me. I feel Baylor is more battle tested than we are. They have played 3 decent to good teams and we have played just one in Iowa. The Iowa game was 28 days ago. Plus they have one extra game and more reps than us. I think this game is going to be a lot harder than people think.

Nah, Baylor had to use a ton of gas to make the last game even close. This is a night game at Trice. It's time to feed.

As a fan who wasn’t born yet in 1980, the story about throwing oranges onto the field makes me sad. There was so much optimism after the success Majors and Bruce had achieved. Fans felt like the team could win a championship when the season started off well. Attendance was at a level not achieved again until the 2010s. Then the university decided to say “screw football” for 20 years until Coach Mac could dig us out.
