I'm still surprised DirecTv doesn't have WGN HD. Anyone know what the heck is up with that? It seems like a logical HD channel to add since they have about 100 others.

the difference is at mediacom you don't have to pay extra to get them.

I guarantee you are paying for them in your monthly charge in some sort of fee or something.

I would also be willing to bet you are spending around $60 a month at Mediacom and that may be low. If I counted right you get around 15 HD channels.

Now with Dish Network you can get 27 HD channels for around $60 to $70 a month after the extra receiver fee, HD programming fee and additional charges.

DISH Network -- Dish HD

You do the math with the difference in prices and number of HD channels and tell me if you aren't paying for them through Mediacom.

well there is no extra charge over regular charges to get HD. The HD box is same amount to lease per month as the digital cable box. I pay $65 per month for family cable, the box, sports pack, starz, and all the taxes and what not.

I just noticed that with directv we get ESPN News in HD now... that is pretty nice! When we were with mediacom you used to have to pay 10 dollars per month for the HD channels, they must have switched it!

I'm paying $50/month for mediacom digital cable. If a cable channel I receive is also available in HD, I receive that as well.

Yeah, they definitely changed it. You use to have to pay 10 dollars a month for all the what..... 8 channels they had in HD.

First I really don't care if you have cable or what cable company you use because that is your money spent not mine, but to make this real simple:

You may not have the extra charge from Mediacom like Dish, but even with the extra charge that Dish charges to get the HD channels, you will still pay the same if not LESS per month then you would with Mediacom and get almost twice as many HD channels. So basically Mediacom is raping you on the cost of the other channels and you are actually paying more for these then you would with Dish just so they can say there is no additional charge for HD.

Like I said it is your money and you are free to do what you want with it, but I highly recommend a Dish (through either company) as you wouldn't be disappointed. I did it about a year ago so I am fairly new to it still, but I know I will never go back to Mediacom. Also the horror stories you hear about outages, well technology has come a long way and in the last year I haven't had one single outage even with all the snow we had this winter.

I think it all depends on a person's situation. I can get a better deal going through mediacom to get my television and cable than going through a dish and having to get a landline that I would never use to get a package deal for internet. The better deal depends on your situation.

Yeah, also how people say that Quest internet compares to Cable.... well, it really doesn't! I use to have Mediacom tv and internet, we switched to Direct tv, but kept the internet so we are overpaying because were not bundling but I don't think I could stand switching to Quest!

Not everyone is allowed to have a dish. I live in an apartment, where I'm not allowed to have a dish, so I'm stuck with cable.

if you were looking at just television. no matter what cable company you look at you are going to loose compared to sat companies. Cable companies always seem to be like 5 years behind on technology. But like cycloneG said above it depends on you situation. For me cable is already included in my rent so i only pay $10 to get digital cable and once mediacom gets more hd boxes i will be able to enjoy those basic hd channels.

I could have dish or direct TV, but I can't get it cheaper so why bother plus I get the cyclone games that are only shown on mediacom. And mediacom supports cyclone athletics by putting their games on TV, and I am happy to support that.

Plus, all of the Cyclone replays are available on demand.

yeah and on demand rocks in general. I know both dish and direct are starting to get it, but from the reviews I have seen it is no where as good as what you can get with cable.

And another plus is I don't have to watch hawkeye replays or sports, alright just kidding I would like to watch their games, but I am not switching over it.

Mediacom has two advantages in my book. Channel 22 and the fact that you don't have to put a dish on your house.

I've priced it out and even had mediacom for 5 years. I get roughly 50 more HD channels that I actually watch with Directv, they have a better HD DVR, their SD is clearer, and I'm paying roughly the same price.

Directv has "on demand". I'm not real impressed with the content but I have a DVR so I just tape everything I need. I've used Mediacom "on demand" and it's ok but I rarely used it.

I am just curious but how is the direct tv hd dvr better? The one I have is 160 gb hd dvr and I can watch other channels while I record something else.

Have you just been calling asking for an HD box or have you gone into the local office? I've heard of someone calling weekly and being told they were "on a waiting list" for a box. Then when they went into the office and asked in person, they were given a box right then with the explanation "we don't like to tell people over the phone that we have HD boxes" Translation: "We don't want to waste HD boxes on our existing customers, we want to keep stringing them along and saving our boxes to attract new customers." So in other words, go into the office and ask for a box if you haven't done so already.
