the difference is at mediacom you don't have to pay extra to get them.
well there is no extra charge over regular charges to get HD. The HD box is same amount to lease per month as the digital cable box. I pay $65 per month for family cable, the box, sports pack, starz, and all the taxes and what not.
First I really don't care if you have cable or what cable company you use because that is your money spent not mine, but to make this real simple:
You may not have the extra charge from Mediacom like Dish, but even with the extra charge that Dish charges to get the HD channels, you will still pay the same if not LESS per month then you would with Mediacom and get almost twice as many HD channels. So basically Mediacom is raping you on the cost of the other channels and you are actually paying more for these then you would with Dish just so they can say there is no additional charge for HD.
Like I said it is your money and you are free to do what you want with it, but I highly recommend a Dish (through either company) as you wouldn't be disappointed. I did it about a year ago so I am fairly new to it still, but I know I will never go back to Mediacom. Also the horror stories you hear about outages, well technology has come a long way and in the last year I haven't had one single outage even with all the snow we had this winter.

I could have dish or direct TV, but I can't get it cheaper so why bother plus I get the cyclone games that are only shown on mediacom. And mediacom supports cyclone athletics by putting their games on TV, and I am happy to support that.
if you were looking at just television. no matter what cable company you look at you are going to loose compared to sat companies. Cable companies always seem to be like 5 years behind on technology. But like cycloneG said above it depends on you situation. For me cable is already included in my rent so i only pay $10 to get digital cable and once mediacom gets more hd boxes i will be able to enjoy those basic hd channels.
