I was surprised my ten minute commute was only 25 this morning in the Twin Cities.

We're in the El Humungo floofy flakes stage now (east of Ames), and they're falling almost straight down...the kind that dumps a couple of inches an hour...

Edit: if the current rate continues, it will be more like 3-4 inches in an hour.

Thanks for the Ames weather updates. He doesn't have class until 11:00 today but he will probably wake up clueless about the ice underneath the snow. I wiped out Friday in the driveway because I didn't realize a puddle had frozen under the snow. And it sounds like ISU has done next to nothing for traction on ice all winter.

We had pellets, freezing rain, and now heavy snow in southern Iowa. Visibility is very poor right now.

I didn't notice that it was very slippery in Ames, but I didn't much feel like testing it either.

Walking to campus wasn't a problem at all. The 2 inches of fresh powder covered any ice there was. Also the one sidewalk that had been cleared had no ice.

I'm a little concerned about getting to Ames (from Bondurant) for Hoiberg's 11:30 press conference...

Chris I just went from the Metro to Ames. I35 was about 45mph. Lucky for me, no knuckleheads flying by.

Just got in to work. I would avoid driving anywhere if possible. Took me 40 minutes for a 15 minute commute.

The interstate at least is completely snow covered and if plows have been through you can't really tell.

How does 4WD help you stop?
The only conceivable way is through engine braking. That only works with a manual transmission, and not particularly well on ice or packed snow... Though, smart/careful braking is always a better option, as it is quite easy to completely lose control when engine braking on slick surfaces.

Yuck. Not a bad day to be off of work and Monday is my usual work from home day. It sounds like i wouldn't be going in to work anyway though.

Ames to Huxley sucked. Couldn't see very far and the roads are pretty much covered. Semi's are still flying by at 75 mph creating white outs for other drivers.

I think most of this is supposed to stop by 10 or so, the heaviest part of the band seems to be through Ames now. I might give yourself a healthy amount of time.
