I'd have to switch rooms. My brain would not allow me to concentrate on anything else until I knew what the switch did.

We’re going to find out eventually that this switch wasn’t even hooked up to anything. It’s some psych student’s phd thesis on the simplest ways to drive regular people insane.

It's a kill switch for all the lights.
The hotel got tired of all the calls and visits to the front desk complaining that none of the lights work so they put a label on the switch. Then they made it red and, thus, menacing.

Do it.

When I was in the UK about 10 years ago, my hotel had a slot I had to put my room key into to turn the power on

Meh. I have a switch like that in my house and it controls switched outlets, which are annoying, so we leave them on all the time.
