Why are the Waterloo schools in the same conference as Des Moines and Ottumwa? Are the same people responsible for NCAA conferences also doing Iowa high school conferences? Geography should matter even more in high school.

As an Ames High grad from the early 80s ... football player, state champion in track, Big 8 Conference ... this makes me want to puke. But it's been coming on for years. I've been well connected with the athletics program since graduation. Football, discipline, parents involvement, coaching changes, and on and on had been an absolute cluster fu*k the last 10 to 15 years. So sad.

As an Ankeny graduate, I remember our conference included Saydel, Boone, Grinnell, Indianola, Urbandale, and South Tama.

Boy how times have changed.

The Waterloo schools either have to go to Des Moines or IC and the Quad Cities, there just are not enough schools around that area for them to play and be part of a conference. Smaller conferences do not want to let them in, as they would be twice the size of many schools. Ottumwa is in the same boat, no other large class schools until you get to Indianola or SE Polk.

West plays the CR/IC/DBQ schools. East wasn't competitive there anymore and decided, rightfully, that getting to play the DSM publics and smaller 4/5As was the better choice.

What’s sad? They are moving to a far more difficult conference from a competitive standpoint.

Ames cannot financially compete against the high growth suburbs of DSM. If Ames was more pro growth and development, it'd have 150,000 residents (including students) with multiple high schools and competitive against metro suburban schools.
I see this view a lot, that Ames somehow missed out on being Ankeny essentially because of being anti-growth.

The only push against “growth” I can recall in the past 20 years was people not wanting a new mall built like 15 years ago.

Ankeny boomed because it’s basically butting up against the biggest city in the state and was at the junction of two of the interstates in the country.

Im sure there were plenty of public incentives and tax breaks given in Ankeny, but even if Ames wanted to it didn’t have the proximity to DM and 80 to do what Ankeny did.

And anyway overall in sports other than football the Ankeny schools aren’t that different from Ames.

Northwest Montana

This whole concept makes me vomit. I grew up in Des Moines and after several moves over 40 plus years, I found my peace and tranquility in NW Montana. My son lives in Ankeny and everytime I visit- the traffic and population density drives me crazy. PSX_20250423_063743_650828355689902.jpg Glacier National Park "Logan Pass." This beautiful place is just minutes from where I reside.

Football has been a mess for quite a few years. The classes that are Srs and Jrs this year had good teams in Junior High, beating the Ankeny schools, etc.

But at least the Jr class very few of the kids that started in 8th grade are even playing football. A few went to other schools but a lot just focusing on other sports.

I’d argue that Ames is growing just fine. Gilbert (Ames north) is growing quite rapidly.

The Ames school boundary is similar to urban dam as any growth is going to be either, Gilbert, Ballard or Nevada.

And this feels like they've essentially thrown up their hands and given up. It's sad. I don't know all the ins and outs of the football program since I'm not connected to it but it's been obvious for a while it's a train wreck. Ames High Aims Meh.

This is what I was going to post. Ames is growing but most of the growth is getting added to the Gilbert school district. How many D1 athletes who have Ames addresses played in Gilbert in the last 20 years?
