Ames High School leaving IAC for Little Hawkeye Conference
One of the founding members of both the Central Iowa Metro League and Iowa Alliance Conference, Ames High School will now be competing in the Little Hawkeye Con
I remember waukee.I remember when Boone was in the LHC.
Wild times.
The Waterloo schools either have to go to Des Moines or IC and the Quad Cities, there just are not enough schools around that area for them to play and be part of a conference. Smaller conferences do not want to let them in, as they would be twice the size of many schools. Ottumwa is in the same boat, no other large class schools until you get to Indianola or SE Polk. Why are the Waterloo schools in the same conference as Des Moines and Ottumwa? Are the same people responsible for NCAA conferences also doing Iowa high school conferences? Geography should matter even more in high school.
West plays the CR/IC/DBQ schools. East wasn't competitive there anymore and decided, rightfully, that getting to play the DSM publics and smaller 4/5As was the better choice. Why are the Waterloo schools in the same conference as Des Moines and Ottumwa? Sounds ******* awfulAmes cannot financially compete against the high growth suburbs of DSM. If Ames was more pro growth and development, it'd have 150,000 residents (including students) with multiple high schools and competitive against metro suburban schools.
What’s sad? They are moving to a far more difficult conference from a competitive standpoint. As an Ames High grad from the early 80s ... football player, state champion in track, Big 8 Conference ... this makes me want to puke. But it's been coming on for years. I've been well connected with the athletics program since graduation. Football, discipline, parents involvement, coaching changes, and on and on had been an absolute cluster fu*k the last 10 to 15 years. So sad.
I see this view a lot, that Ames somehow missed out on being Ankeny essentially because of being anti-growth.Ames cannot financially compete against the high growth suburbs of DSM. If Ames was more pro growth and development, it'd have 150,000 residents (including students) with multiple high schools and competitive against metro suburban schools.
Football has been a mess for quite a few years. The classes that are Srs and Jrs this year had good teams in Junior High, beating the Ankeny schools, etc.As an Ames High grad from the early 80s ... football player, state champion in track, Big 8 Conference ... this makes me want to puke. But it's been coming on for years. I've been well connected with the athletics program since graduation. Football, discipline, parents involvement, coaching changes, and on and on had been an absolute cluster fu*k the last 10 to 15 years. So sad.
I’d argue that Ames is growing just fine. Gilbert (Ames north) is growing quite rapidly.Ames cannot financially compete against the high growth suburbs of DSM. If Ames was more pro growth and development, it'd have 150,000 residents (including students) with multiple high schools and competitive against metro suburban schools.
And this feels like they've essentially thrown up their hands and given up. It's sad. I don't know all the ins and outs of the football program since I'm not connected to it but it's been obvious for a while it's a train wreck. Ames High Aims Meh.As an Ames High grad from the early 80s ... football player, state champion in track, Big 8 Conference ... this makes me want to puke. But it's been coming on for years. This is what I was going to post. Ames is growing but most of the growth is getting added to the Gilbert school district. How many D1 athletes who have Ames addresses played in Gilbert in the last 20 years?I’d argue that Ames is growing just fine. Gilbert (Ames north) is growing quite rapidly.
The Ames school boundary is similar to urban dam as any growth is going to be either, Gilbert, Ballard or Nevada.
