I would avoid going through Nashville and Atlanta during either rush hour like a plague. Lots of southern cities like those (and Charlotte and Raleigh come to mind, too) grew way faster than their highway infrastructure. Traffic in Orlando can be Mad Max levels of crazy in its own ways, too, if you hit it at the wrong times, just like it can in Atlanta.

Adjust based on your own point of departure, but...

Ames to Nashville = 11 hours
Nashville to Atlanta = 4 hours
Atlanta to Orlando = 6.5 hours

I would leave Iowa in the late morning, which puts you into Nashville in the late evening/early night after the traffic has calmed down.

If you are going to swap drivers and "Cannonball" this the whole way without stopping, you can just keep rolling at that point. You will go through Atlanta in the middle of the night and show up in Orlando after the morning traffic has cleared.

If you are going to stop, stopping a little past Nashville -- Murfreesboro? -- would make sense. Get through Nashville late after traffic has cleared, hit the hay, sleep in, and then go through Atlanta in the late morning/midday after the worst of the morning rush hour is over. You would get into Orlando in the evening for dinner, then you can crash and wake up the next day and enjoy your time there. Reverse this for heading back to Iowa.

:)

Would you anticipate Atlanta/Nashville being better on the weekend if you happen to hit "rush hour" on the drive back or are they crap no matter the day of the week?

Seconding this recommendation since it's almost exactly what we did when we moved earlier this year. Left the QC around noon, had no issues getting through Nashville since it was later and spent the night in Murfreesboro before continuing on in the morning.

What is the allotment?
Not sure. Would guess between 7 to 10K. Have a feeling we will have a good crowd down there but not close to the numbers we had in San Antonio or Memphis. Lot harder to drive to and flights arent cheap. Maybe people just getting tickets through other ways.

Have fun for those of you doing a Cannonball run from Iowa to Florida...

You all might want to try looking into flying in JAX or TPA instead of MCO and renting a car once you are down there. Might cheaper than trying to do the DSM to MCO routing around the bowl game, which I imagine will be expensive.
I just did that drive last month. It's not terrible once you get out of Florida, but gets crappy again in Misery.

8000

Think we’ve sold 4500 through the AD so far.

Agree much easier and cheaper to get to San Antonio. What was the allotment last year?
