Iowa State should be third....it would be a disappointment if we did not all things considered with the state of the other programs after Texas and OU. Of course, we are absolutely at the whim of the fickle finger of fate and the dangling dong of destiny as far as quarterback health goes with our program....not such an issue for the OU/TEX semi-professional men's football clubs...er I mean college team. We may never beat Texas again in my lifetime...I've said that before.
What kind of law do you practice Jay?

It will all come down to the improvement of the OL and the play calling and scheme improving dramatically offensively IMO. We can't be 95th again this year in Total Offense. Play calling and scheme was not good last year.

Great read and analysis. I can't quibble with the rankings. A very balanced league indeed. Agree that ISU could finish third but could easily slip to fifth or sixth. Hopefully, cyclone fans are not too disappointed if that should happen. CMC has exceeded expectations based upon recruiting ratings. The staff has shown a keen eye for talent and developing it. But the margin will be thin.

Can't wait for the season to begin !

What kind of law do you practice Jay?

TX has a very good QB and a good coach, but they are replacing a ton of guys on defense, and several OL. Yeah, I know they have great recruiting classes, but everything is not always clear sailing when you replace that many guys. ISU definitely needs to figure the TX defense out, because they have really struggled against them the last few years.

Fun read, as always. Was a little surprised that Jay had WV in the '3' grouping.
Jay's point that the O-line will be basically the same guys who had a very average year is the most concerning. More so IMO than replacing our RB and WR stars. Hoping that a year of experience and coaching makes the difference with the OL.

I think we are much too worried about QB depth. Have we not been paying attention to the last two QB crises?

Park goes out, Kempt comes in, we beat Oklahoma.
Kempt goes out, Purdy comes in, we have our best season ever.

Nobody thought we had enough QB depth then either!

I love Purdy, but it could be really special to see Mitchell, arguably our fastest player, at QB. And who knows what Kolar is capable of. From my vantage point, he looks pretty much like Kempt before the OU game. And Easton Dean is only a freshman, but this staff recruited him and they seem to do pretty well when they get their guys.

I've been in prove it to me me mode regarding Texas but I'm firmly in the "they're back" camp. Ehlinger has one of the most punchable faces to ever don the burnt orange but he is a damn good QB and his running ability completely changes their offense.

This honestly took me a minute to figure out what you meant. You have their back? I finally got it: They're back.

I think that less than third at the end of the season would be a little disappointing. This is our best chance to challenge Texas and Oklahoma for the crown. I really think our defense is good enough and Purdy will improve. The offensive line and running game are the question marks, but I think offensive line will be improved. While losing Montgomery sucks, we have tons of depth at RB and may be just as efficient overall in our running game. It’s a great time to be a Cyclone fan!

I noticed that Zachary Evans, the top running back in the 2020 class and a Texas kid thought to be a Longhorn lean, just eliminated UT, saying “they aren’t there yet”.

It’ll be interesting to see who’s right. While Herman has landed some amazing prospects st certain positions, OL recruiting has been more like “solid”.

Seems to be doing better in the current class.

While I will agree that TX is back in terms of not having 6 or less wins this year, they still have a ton of guys to replace, especially on defense. ISU will be in the same situation after this year.

Not really. Bailey, Lima, Spears,and Lewis, however valuable, are not “a ton of guys”. They may not even prove to be irreplaceable.
