And the entire salary applies to the cap in the year paid.
Which will be less of a problem for them, then signing him to a poor contract for the team. They are supposed to have plenty of cap room after the season, I would much rather have $40 million on the books next year than trying to deal with a 5 year $250 million contract going forward.
From everything I have read Purdy wants to be in SF, and they want to sign him, right now they are trying to come together on a number that will make both happy. If Purdy wants to set the market, they are not going to go for that, if he is willing to cut them a deal, they will, say $200 million over 5 years.

He’s been the most consistent offensive player on the team, lead them to a SB, and consistently ranks in the top of all QBs. He will get paid, but SF has got a few pieces to fill, so I think they are low balling to see what they can get away with. Feels like they are still under the impression that he’s not really a top notch QB. Total BS.

The tag for quarterbacks for 2026 is projected to be $46.186 million, 2027 the projection is $56.014. Purdy's base salary for this season is $5.3 million, so it will cost them a projected is $107.5 million if he plays for them for next 3 years under those terms.

This is why SF will pay him this offseason. Because letting him play and then tagging him twice means they won’t resign him after AND they’ll pay him $100+ million that way. Might as well give him 4/$160-$180 to make him happy and you aren’t paying much more than you would have with the tagging strategy.

The only way I see SF not paying him is if they don’t think he’s their answer for the next 4 years (which they do). I think it’s a near certainty Brock gets a huge deal this offseason.

apologies if this has been explained already, but how is Purdy getting $5m this season?

I thought he signed a 4-yr 3. something-million rookie deal and this is year 4?

It will be over $50 million per year. Or no contract will be signed. And Purdy will not be an option in a couple years. Locker room will be divided. Screwing over Purdy would be a public relations nightmare. Highest character team guy ever. Purdy literally saved the 49ers from the Trey Lance debacle. Evidently Shannahan can’t just plug and play anyone at QB unless his name is Purdy.

Both sides are saying all the right things and appear that they want to get something done. If there isn't an agreement by mid summer, I could see things becoming more contentious. The 49ers have benefited greatly by Brock's draft position. Brock has been grossly under paid for his role as the team's starting QB. Even his backups have made more than him. He will be grossly under paid this fall if a new deal is not reached. Will the 49ers be sympathetic to what he hasn't been paid and offer him a deal in good faith or will they use his rookie contract to their benefit and low ball him? Brock is a nice guy. I hope his agent isn't. Lack of a deal could really cause some hard feelings in the locker room. Brock's teammates know he deserves to be paid.

I’m sure SF would love to do a 4/$180M. My guess is Brock wouldn’t be happy with that, reading through the tea leaves around the commentary of this extension

Brock Purdy was 2nd team All Big 12 as a sophomore and a senior. Brock Purdy was 1st team All Big 12 as a junior. Purdy was the MVP in the Fiesta Bowl. Purdy was a very accomplished and honored player for several years in the Big 12. He is an elite talent whose accomplishments have been continuously overlooked and underrated by the NFL And it continues.

So his numbers are way off. $41 was the number for this off season ($7.5 more than last). Next year (year 1 of tag) will be around $48 and the following will be higher as well.
At minimun the 2nd year tag will be 120% of whatever the first year tag ends up being. If $48M the second year would be at least $57.6M.

I see no way the 49ers let him leave if he produces at a high level, if they do, then they will already have someone on the team to replace him. They are taking a chance either way they go, lock him up and there is a chance he underperforms , or let it go and see what happens. I have always said I would to the franchise tag route for a season or two as opposed to locking him up long term. He looked great at times. but has looked very average at times also.
If?? That's what's annoying. IF. He already has produced at a high level. If they want to mess with that locker room and the vibes his current teammates have about him, go for it. Then they can find out how well that's worked out for other organizations. Good QB's don't grow on trees and they owe Brock for saving some jobs and that franchise from imploding.

Not sure why so many people get personal about a player that will make more next season and in his career than basically everyone that posts on this board. He gets what he gets, really not going to worry if that is $30 million a season or $60 million a year. Purdy could easily make $200 to $300 million over his career, at his tax bracket what is a few million more going to make a difference?

Because he's an ISU quarterback who's been one of the top QB's in the NFL, but also the lowest paid QB and most disrespected QB in the NFL. It's not complicated.

Why not, he played at ISU. Why do you care how much money he will be paid? LOL

Teams and scouts are unsure about Purdy, saw a stat yesterday that showed how much his performance dropped off from the first half of a game to the 2nd half of the game. The league is unsure is he an elite QB or just a very good one that has elite skilled position player around him? Purdy did nothing last season to put those worries to rest. I have stated many times, if I was in charge of team, I would play it out, unless Purdy is willing to sign a team friendly deal, 3 years $100 million or so. If he wants $50 million a year, I would say, we got you the next 3 seasons, maybe you will change your mind. If he goes out and becomes the next Mahomes, then you offer him whatever he wants to sign, if not, you plan on replacing him in the next three years.

And he could have a career ending injury next year and never play another down.

The other (remote?) possibility is he might donate a bit of that wealth to worthy causes including ISU/NIL funding. We could all enjoy the fruits of that possibility.

You don’t play games with a qb who has won 4 playoff games.. he’s done more in 4 years than Kirk cousins has done in 15 years

50 Mill is honestly the lowest I think you could even offer. 55 would be a deal for SF and David Lombardi has talked about this extensively.
