Would be interesting to have a private conversation with him today about all the changes concerning realignment and expectations for today’s athletes. I always thought he was a sports purist in the original sense of amateur athletes.

A lot of people think of John Walters as the Godfather as the voice of the Cyclones. I'm sure that is fair for many of the younger generation. To me, Pete was the Godfather as the voice of the Cyclones.
When John Walters was first referred to as the Godfather, it was meant as a reference to Old School - not saying he was the original voice of the Cyclones. OG WRNL coined the nickname and those were guys who grew up listening to Pete.

I became a Cyclone when I saw Pete interviewing Johnny Majors on a Saturday morning. For a kid, he was cool. The choices were Zim Zabel and beat the Bear or Pete and Johnny Majors. Easy choice.

Worked with him as a student in the athletic office. You know what they say about blind men would listen to Sandy Koufax pitch batting practice. Well, at football games, when passing out stats, I stopped outside his booth just to hear his play by play.

I did not realize he was that young. Mortality is an interesting thing. At 35 I am now seven years away from when my dad had his heart attack and my son is now older than I was when that happened.

Edit: I should say he survived and is thankfully still with us but something that is crosses your mind.

Oh Good Night! When things were going poorly.
JW does great, but I grew up on Pete and will always have him as a personal favorite. Love them both as announcers though.

Happened while I was at Iowa State - I remember how shocked everyone was.

When your announcer has his "jersey" in the rafters at Hilton, that's how impactful and important Pete Taylor was to Iowa State athletics.
