Eesh, fell behind this year. Only saw Wicked off that list. Added Conclave to my queue lastnight though as I saw it was available.

I liked his message at the end of his speech and I understand it's obviously personal for him, but the way he was able to switch from human talking, asking for more time, into actor saying memorized words with manufactured tears, came off as very disingenuous.

I'm not a fan of celebrating those who are already celebrated. It's a room of elites circlejerking each other about how awesome they are.

Being said, I do love usually checking out the movies nominated because there is some merit behind many of the Best Picture nominees.

My few thoughts:

1. Mikey Madison winning over Demi Moore proves The Substance is more documentary than fiction, a la Ryan Gosling getting nominated for Barbie but not Margot Robbie last year.

2. I LOVED the first half of the Brutalist, but hated the second half. It really fell off the rails for me, but the cinematography and original score wins were absolutely deserved.

3. Ashamedly, I have not yet seen Anora (coming to Hulu later this month, though), but my favorites were Dune: Part 2, Conclave, and The Substance.

4. Sean Baker the obvious winner of the night, and I thought he did a great job at the mic. Go to the theaters, people!

5. A couple of movies I was bummed to see receive no real recognition throughout the cycle were Challengers and The Bikeriders. Really, really liked both of those.

6. My girls were VERY excited to see Wicked get recognized a couple of times. While the overall award recognitions were a bit stretched for this movie for me, it was cool to see my pre-teens get excited about watching the Oscars.

I honestly switched the channel when he started his 10 minute speech. All actors should be required to watch the acceptance speech of Julie Andrews in 1965, a model of modesty and humbleness.

I went into it expecting him to have a heartfelt message, especially as a Jew who has played several incredible roles depicting the struggle of the Jewish immigrant. That message was a footnote to his rambling. I've never had an issue with Brody and still don't, but I just didn't think his speech came off as authentic or meaningful.

Some of these folks (Chalamet) get so self obsessed with their greatness that they fail to realize their actions and jobs are pretty meaningless outside of entertaining the masses. They're jesters, clowns, but think of themselves as royalty because they throw themselves all these parties the first 3 months of the year just to celebrate themselves. The arts need to be recognized and deserve to be celebrated, but at the end of the day, every single person in a tuxedo and fancy dress is a human no more important than you or I.

Side note: What was up with everyone kissing The Brutalist's director right on the mouth? At first I thought maybe he's foreign and it's a cultural thing? Nope, he's American. Maybe it was just a European actor who smooched him once? Nope, it was any and all who worked on the film and walked past him who got one planted on the lips.

For this kind of thing I like:
-Intro/early skits and again loved Conan last night. He finds the perfect balance of humoring people without going too far. Iirc Jimmy Kimmel last year (?) just kept going into people no matter how cringe it was.

-Side gags throughout the show and again very Conanesque last night with the LAFD throwing a joke his way.

-the 'In memory' piece. We don't personally know these people but some like James Earl Jones had a profound impact through their movies and will be missed.

In regards to Conclave, which I want to see: John Lithgow (my first memory is Harry and the Hendersons) has really ramped up a great career as time has gone on.
His acting on Dexter as the Trinity Killer, was legendary.

Conclave is great...kinda shocked to see it was rated PG but honestly it makes sense once you see it. It's pretty cut and dry, no violence, no vulgarity etc.

I loved Conclave. Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Isabella Rosselini....there's a lot to like.
