I like Pav. I think he will add something to the existing team. I also think having our starting big guy back MIGHT help something. It may change what happens on d a little bit.

VT’s pg underestimated him the brief time they were one on one.

TJ needs to split time evenly between Curtis, Kheson, and Jackson, at the very least. Gilbert and Jones are getting around 30 min and Pav us only getting about 8. Make them each about 25.

Thoughts: team still determining roles and offensive flow against better competition. Tamin needs to be the straw that stirs. Gilbert is solid, but he needs to excel as off ball and 35% point.

Seemed that he ran primary point tonight.

A lot of wide spacing with slow probing passes, no real intention aside from iso.

Need to get MM watching tape of Rip/Reggie. He’s too good at catch and shoot/turnaround he needs to be steadily moving and getting back screens to make him open.

Left a lot on the court. Too many uncharacteristic turnovers. Tamin on a few that would’ve been 6 points.

Defensive intensity was weak in first half. Legs or focus. Not sure.

They’ll learn to drive that without the fans doing it for them.

Got 3-4 guys that are trying to establish that they belong, and it’s not quite in the “make the next pass/best play” vibe that Cyclones MBB thrives with. Too much iso currently (Gilbert, C Jones, Pav, and Milan)

Haven’t looked but if we do a better job on boards, limiting our turnovers, and of course FT we get that.

They hit some stupid shots as well

Lastly, we’re officially in the “what the H is a block/charge?!?” portion of the season. Very similar plays called wildly different throughout the game. If the goal is to neuter the D just standing like statues not sure what they can legally do, mission accomplished.

Will be interested to see what that looks like come Jan/Feb.

MARK MY WORDS:

Curtis Jones = Gabe Kalsheur.
(and I will die on that hill)

Make of that what you will.

Now we can debate whether that's a good thing or a bad thing, but it's a fact.

He’s not even close to Gabe. Gabe was a better defender and a WAY better shooter.

I think A&M will probably kick ass if they want to. What are our chances at DePaul?

Patience is required with this team....I imagine this team has already learned a lot of itself from both games so far. It concerns me a bit that Keshon is playing a lot of hero ball in important stretches...forcing lots of ill-advised shots up when driving the lane instead of looking to dish off...but hopefully, that will come with time and coaching.

They. Have. Shooters! We do NOT…. period.

Same story as last night. Our only hope down the stretch last night and tonight was to have Tamin or Gilbert literally plow into the lane and crash into people, flail their arms in the air and hope they call a foul.

Only difference…. last night we made some of those FTs and VCU choked on the other end. Tonight we missed ‘em…. and VT didn’t.

Everyone that was prematurely excited about last night’s lucky win, came back to reality a bit tonight…. even though we didn’t play any better last night and there were GLARING weaknesses on our squad if you were being anywhere near realistic.

The list of issues with this team is quite long tbh. You can admit it or deny it.

MM is likely a great shooter and Tamin could possibly be growing into one. Frank Mason was nothing special as a shooter early on and grew into a ridiculous one, I could see Tamin on that path.

Beyond that it really is a question. Can Gilbert, Pav, Watson and Jones actually shoot it? Are they any better taking shots out there than Tre King? I don’t think we know for sure yet. At least Tre King can hit a free throw, maybe King should be shooting more in that context.

I do think Gilbert brings a lot of other things even if he’s not a true shooter. He had ten rebounds and manufactured offense yesterday, we aren’t even close on that comeback without him. I think MM and Tamin are obviously our most valuable pieces but I’d probably go with Gilbert as the next piece even with ups and downs.
