The movie The Hangover has that as practically the first word several times and was a huge hit, really not that old of a movie. Things have changed a lot.

Have people read the context around the quote? Because it definitely makes it much more abhorrent imo. It wasn't like he just said, "Ah those Catholic **** are so annoying". Which wouldn't be good or anything but what he said and the context around it was way worse than that.

The other people on air being pretty crude too.

Eh, it still was, it just shows the etymology. As with many other slurs against gay men, it had its roots in feminine insults being applied to men with more feminine traits that many gay men often have been viewed to have.

per wiki:
Even when men want to insult men without reference to their sexual preference, they use terminology associated with women, as if being a woman is the biggest insult of all.

Surprised no one has commented on how bad that radio interview is. Bunch of old guys having a stupid inside conversation. Why would anyone want to listen to that?

We are incredibly spoiled with trifecta of CF pods, IA Everywhere and the cyclone network coaches shows/pre/post game.

I wouldn't be surprised if Mad Fran McCaffery hasn't thrown that word out to referees, Marge or Roy Marble Jr. in a fit of rage.

Looks like his lawyers have written a statement for him. I doubt anything happens to him although I feel like some discipline would be appropriate.

I am 62 and have never said that word. When I was in high school, I heard it said by boys frequently but never girls. I never heard it at our house either and I had four brothers.

Being Catholic in small town southern Iowa, I did hear slur words about Catholics frequently as well. One of the high school teachers brought in her husband’s KKK robe and hood for some bizarre show and tell. The handful of us Catholic students, the two Jewish students, and the three black students all tried to decide at lunch one day if it was aimed at all of us or just a select group or two, or if the teacher was just clueless in general. My brothers were old enough to remember the Klan burning a cross in our churchyard, but it was before I was born.
I’m southern Ia. & 10 years older and heard whispers of the Klan in the 50’s. But if your HS teacher in the 70’s brought in her husband’s KKK robe, I hope she was in her 80’s. But yeah that stuff lingered from post WWII folks. Our City Council quietly removed an ordinance on the books that blacks couldn’t stay in town over 24 hours that they discovered. The racism prejudice hate etc. we have today been around forever.

64, from Chicago, lived in L.A., S.F., Minnesota, and now WV. Have two very good friends who are openly gay who just rolled their eyes at people making such a big deal about this. Was it appropriate? No. But, even they can wrap the proper context around it. I wonder what half this crowd would think if they ever went to an open mic comedy in S.F. If it was an every day thing, then I'd join you lynch mob people. But, c'mon.

I can count on one hand the number of schools I imagine are less likely to fire someone for using that word than West Virginia. Huggy Bear may luck out by being in one of the least progressive places in America.

This comment is rich coming from a Iowa fan. It could be a excuse to fire but won't be. It's similar to McDermott's comment a few yrs back.
